Hi all,

Ready to purchase an external recorder. I'll be using it with my c100mk2 and being able to record 60P is important which is why I've narrowed it down to these two. I'll also be using it for a client monitor. Selling off my AC7 OLED so this will be replacing it as well. Eventually will be using it with the c300mk2 so just wanted to make sure I'd have room to grow with whatever I chose. I will be doing a lot of traveling with the recorder so durability is important to me.

Some points that have me leaning towards the Shogun:
- Does 120FPS at 1080 (for c300mk2)
- Comes free with the action pack if bought in june (hood, bumper, travel case, screen protector)

CD still offers 2 free 256 drives via bhphoto and other resellers so that's a plus.

Would appreciate any insight and discussion as to what you've been using and what you've liked about it. Thanks

We have previously announced that HD & 2K Apple ProRes up to 240fps (depending what a camera will output) will soon be available on the Odyssey7Q+. So that will give you the 120fps you mention.

Testers seem to agree that the 7Q+ is better value overall, better LCD, much more features and recording formats, much better build quality, the shogun is just a bit more ''sleek'', takes off-the-shelf media, marginally cheaper and the overall user interface/touchscreen response and UI design is preferred.

I'd take the 7Q+ for more recording options and future compatibility, build quality and better screen under sunlight. I might consider the Shogun for a small a7s or gh4 as a sleeker less complicated solution that's a bit cheaper, lighter, sleeker, easier to use, takes cheaper media I have and cheaper smaller batteries and I don't need many connectors/inputs and don't abuse it much, in-short, it's better for consumer-ish type of use for its price/media/batteries/UI.

But for a C100II and a C300II in your situation, go with the Odyssey. It's more advanced and a robust proven workhorse and will take the Canon raw format (though with a paid license, but can take it) from the C300II and convert it to other formats and such. It's just more ''robust'' for bigger cameras and productions and future proof. It's more expensive but better as a solid long-term investment.

I had both and the 7Q+ is the winner. They weight pretty much the same but the build is much better and the battery life is also longer on the 7Q+.

I didn't like the Shogun UI at all. Way to many menu trees to activate a tool. 7Q+ is one press away and the tool pops up. No sub menu for tools.

I had dropped frames in 4K with Shogun with SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD. Never had a dropped frame with the 7Q+

Soon the 7Q+ will be able to use Samsung EVO SSD drives making the cost of media much more affordable.

Thats my thoughts on both. I did a review of the 7Q+ a while back. The firmware has been updated since but the overall review is still relevant.

Mitch, will we need the raw bundle license to record the 120fps to prores out of the C300mk2?
I'll have to check into how the 120fps is output from the camera. If it is RAW or a specialized format, then yes, you likely will. If it is in a video structure then we wouldn't charge. But please note that there is no SMPTE standard for 120fps video transport. I'm guessing Canon simply set up a pair of 60fps streams and alternated the frames.

Please note that we do not yet support this as we still have not yet released our high speed Apple ProRes recording.

Thanks for the in-depth review! And thank you to everyone else for chiming in.

I'm probably going with the 7Q+. The fact that it writes and closes files is important to me.

Mitch, does the 7Q+ "dual record" the same stream to both SSDs? Also, does it (or will it) offer anamorphic desqueeze in the future? Finally, one feature that I saw that interested me since I edit in FCPX was this :

"Create FCPX XML Projects
Create Final Cut Pro X XML projects in the field so you are ready to edit straight away. Favorite/reject flags in the metadata let you quickly finding and uploading the best shots into FCPX or Adobe Premiere Pro.

I may not even use that feature though just comparing and contrasting some final points.

Thanks

Dual Record, aka Mirror Record, is something that we do plan to add in the future for most of the recording modes that do not require the use of two SSDs (some high frame rate RAW and heavy data rate DPX formats spit out so much data at once that both SSDs are needed). No timeline at this point, but some of our governmental and industrial clients have requested it.

Thanks for the insight. Any comment on anamorphic desqueeze and the FCPX XML?

Anamorphic Desqueeze is in the current release, an update that came out at the beginning of June. Our next update will include some more options for anamorphic viewing. One of the notable aspects of our anamorphic desqueeze is that it is not just for the Odyssey's OLED panel but is also sent out over SDI and HDMI outputs. That's not a feature available anywhere else at the moment.

The FCP XML info with clip notes has been available for months now. You can mark takes as good or bad, plus include more detailed notes. You can also flag multiple points on a given take for editorial as well note up to 16 pair of in & out points for useful material. I know clients who take their Odyssey monitor/recorder to dinner or a bar after a shoot day to review footage and mark takes for post.

Amazing. Purchasing one for sure. Much thanks.
