C300: cases for air travel

Most crews working in the United States have easy access to FedEx and UPS locations where thousands of dollars of rented equipment is waiting usually close by the production location(s). Even if filming will be taking place deep in the woods or mountains over here, you can most likely still find one 1-2-3 hours away. And if companies aren't renting, they are usually driving everything over in huge trucks. (Big budgets/projects.)

Although I think I remember you saying you work in many remote locations so you may be in a compromised situation regardless, and have no choice but to pack what you really need and pay and hope for the best.

I did a shoot in Atlanta two years ago. I brought my own C300 MKII from LA. But everything else (was a three camera shoot), I ordered from www.lensrentals.com and had it delivered to FedEx in Atlanta. We landed, headed straight to FedEx,
loaded it all up, went to set and shot for three days. On the way out of town, dropped it all at the same FedEx, worked out great, it was a dream compared to being a human pack mule through airports. I have also shipped a TON of gear
from LA to NYC to FedEx and that can get expensive (I think it was about $2k in shipping and insurance) so renting from lensrentals.com is so much cheaper for the shipping, it's like $25.00 or $50.00 for the whole order.

I'm so done flying with gear, unless it's small and light like my X-T3s. But grip and lighting gear? Big, heavy cameras? Rent it wherever you're traveling.

LR is all I've used...so convenient the way they do it. (I'm assuming other places offer the same thing.)

Are you kidding me - LR looks too easy and dirt cheap! I wouldn't own any equipment, I'd just send the producer a link to a shopping cart saying based on the brief and references, this is what we need for the shoot. If it's too expensive you just start eliminating items from the list, of course while production values take a hit. Or send them multiple packages, decreasing in price and capability. This isn't too different to listing your own gear or forwarding quotes from a rental house in an email but this format is so simple.

I know, make money from equipment etc. Realistically I'd still own a lot of equipment for other benefits but living in the US and doing the airport/large amount of equipment thing - no way.

https://www.pods.com/ - what about loading one of these up with a G&E package then getting it dropped to the shoot?

LR has worked very well for me. I don't have to rent a lot of gear but when I do, they make it a breeze and I've never had a breakdown or QC issue from a Lens Rentals item.

Regarding shipping expensive gear to the location, do you get shipping insurance? Googling FedEx, it lists $1 for every $100 of coverage. So, shipping insurance for say $200k of equipment would come out to $2,000, not including the cost of shipping the items.

When UPS destroyed my Amira and I had decided not to get UPS insurance, thankfully my equipment insurance covered the damages, but I wonder if all equipment coverage policies would cover shipping, and also if mine would continue to if I had more shipping issues.

If you use Lensrentals, you can use their coverage (if you choose to).

Maybe they even cover shipping without the customer adding that, and the damage is only for user damage, IDK. (But I imagine they have some kind of relationship/agreement with these delivery services.)

Here's the rate for renting an AMIRA Premium Kit for Monday and returning it the following Monday (the 15th). Not including tax or shipping.

You can also choose "Damage & Theft", but it's more.

P.S. Barely anyone here - probably no one - is renting $200K worth of equipment. lol

I don't think anyone really insures really expensive gear(like cameras that cost many $10K's) with their shipper for full value, because most* insurance will cover the loss/damage. At most, you would just insure it for your deductible. And yes, too many claims(which could be the first one) could get your policy cancelled.

*Please check with your agent/specific policy to make sure.
