The difference from the old cinema projection is that, for modern releases, one can do a pan&scan too. And that allows for better reframing.
And, as Charles Papert mentioned with regards to the Beatles documentary by Peter Jackson, modern technology allows for the digital zoom-ins and upscaling. And, while it's correct that the upscaled shots often don't look as good as the original, a quality reframing and transfer can often come close.
