CARRY-ON - A Caffesse/Wildman Film

Luis, I wanted to come stop by and let you know my FULL review is coming soon. I liked your short a lot, lots of great stuff in this. I've been extremely busy with pre-prod, and some family issues, but things are settling down, and I should be able to get a review to you soon! :)

Well, we'd like to think this film is about more than cheating.
At least, it was intended to be.
:)

This has to be one of my favorite comments so far.
We really wanted a 'natural' look in the bookstore - so you have no idea how happy I am that you asked if it was lit at all. We have three four bank flos set up in front of them (going over the table of books) and two 650watts as backlights for the actors. Not a whole lot of firepower there, but it was most definitely lit. I've got some BTS shots of the setup somewhere around here and as soon as I can dig them up I'll post them so you can see it.
It was very well done there. I want to see those BTS shots now

Well, I'm glad to see there is some debate on that idea - but I do really feel the need to point out here that Scott is far from fat.
:)

Whats funny is that he probably is thinner than me and I registered him being that AFTER seeing the other guy. Weird the way the mind works sometimes. Its like being conditioned to automatically think in stereotypes when not paying attention. I haven't gone back to look yet but when I have time next week I will peek at him again.
Still... great damn job all the way around. Now I want to see whats lurking under that wookie mask.

A very strong and professional entry.

To get one thing out of the way off the bat – all the technical elements are excellent.

As strong as all the elements are, the writing is the real star. The relationship is complex and intriguing and because it’s so hard to pin down exactly what is going on it is all the more interesting and intriguing. Pinter-esque even. And you do such a good job of directing our attention one way while heading somewhere else.

Seems like you were able to fix the audio on the last line. Or maybe it’s just that I have better speakers / know what she’s saying now.

One thing that's maybe a misstep for me, then again maybe not. We see her upset in the car, before the last line but when she delivers the last line she just tosses it off like she’s really talking about a movie. I would like to see some kind of chink in her armor there. I think that would be a much more powerful ending to see her sad there. But as it is it’s very slick and works very well.

Excellent excellent work. Definitely top 5 if not top 3.

This was one of my favorites in the fest. The acting is some of the best I've seen here. I think it's hard to keep a scene (let alone two) going dancing around what was "said" but damn if it didn't work extremely well here. The pacing, the direction, all of it paid off really well. Generally dancing around something like that can make one lose interest -- but I was pretty much hooked from the get go... never felt tired. I think I'm rambling.

Great work. Just some awesome tension and drama... damn you did a good job. I'm definitely looking forward to more from you...!

Great film. I seem to have a problem with Jojopop being one step ahead of my reviews. And having worked with him for so long, he's saying pretty much exactly what I was getting ready to type. So... read his comment and times it by 2.

Great work. Love the actors and that low depth of field.

Keep it up!

awesome film!

terrific acting. the woman was amazing! happy, desperate, defensive, and then sad. she did really well! not to take away from the guy he did well too. he even seemed to turn a bit red with frustration in the book store.

the scene outside where they had the fight was so well done, from the sound to the pacing to the lighting, too cool how she walked a bit and then faced directly into the light after telling him to shut up, ( did you block that on purpose? wow nice look ) that came out so strong. it looked and felt like a real movie. the end was strong too by allowing us to see the toys in the room.

congrats on a great job! thanks!

Luis, I finally got the watch it. I really enjoyed it. I thought your direction was flawless and so was the acting. I liked your locations as well. This was a good story and I like how we came in on the middle of something and had to hang on every single word to play catch up.

This was a super professional piece. There's nothing in here that wasn't top notch in my opinion. I think audio (consistent audio), especially with dialogue has to be seamless and yours was right on.

The only thing I wonder about is why the guy was so dead set against going on the trip and just getting serious. I may have missed something, but I didn't get that he was married. Maybe he had a ring on or something and I didn't see it, but I guess we're to assume that he was and that's why he had the reactions he did. It may have been more compelling for us to see him going home to his wife, since he was the one doing the most fighting. Anyway, just a thought - I think it still works just fine the way it is too.

You guys should be very proud of this film. Good luck and sorry it took me so long to get to it, man.

My cousin and I are riding around today... we both notice a pretty hot girl walking down a row of cars in the parking lot... nobody was talking about anything and my cousin says out of the blue, "how was the movie honey?... it was sad... freakin' *****... women are like that you know"...

Of course he's been burned in the not too distant past... but hey, you gotta' admit... clearly this short makes an impact.

I don't know how constructive this post is... but it's absolutely true and I thought you might enjoy hearing this. I told you I showed it to everybody... and I did... and it sticks with people. I wish I had done this.

This was my top choice. You took a very simple concept, presented it well. Definitely my favorite actress in the competition.

I think other people have covered my critiques. I didn't agree with some of the camera angles in the book store where they were basically standing in front of a big superblurred background. Overall, though, great camerawork. Some of the guy's line deliveries didn't sit well.

Nailed the story, though. Emotionally and intellectually solid front to back. Can't ask for more.

This was in my top 3 as well, but in fairness to the other top entries (what? 5 anyway?) there were some stunners in the fest this round. Of course this short was ALSO a stunner... but I'm just saying... hopefully you can take pride in finishing within the best, even if you didn't personally break the tape on your chest.

I found this to be one of the strongest films. Good to see an adaptor shoot which stayed sharp too. The actors were really great as was all other facets.

As I'd mentioned earlier, this was my #1. A real shame you didn't win anything...

Oh well, you keep making films of this caliber, and you'll be sure to pull off a place sometime.

where's Luis? you really rocked quite a few faces off with this entry, Luis... I hope you're proud... and not crying in a corner somewhere. Chin up, bro! get this f*cker in a festival somewhere.

Luis and Cliff, GREAT JOB to you both. I am sure that you can be certain that your film was in the Top 5 and that is quite an achievement that you should be proud of. (hell, you should be proud no matter WHAT the votes where.... your film was as near to perfection as one finds! So many strong elements.)

Congrats on making and completing a film (the hardest things for most people to do!).

I can't wait to see what you guys bring next!

-Ted

Thanks everyone for the incredibly motivating and kind posts.

Hahhaa - not to worry Zak, I'm not crying in a corner.
Not at all.
This was one hell of a festival - and to even have people tell us we were near the top is amazing to me.

We're just proud to have included a little piece of one of the winning entries in our film.
:)

thanks everyone - for the praise, your time, but most importantly your criticism.

it is way too easy to become insulated in your own 'world of talent.' you're basically drinking your own kool-aid... this is the best fest i have competed in on or off-line. the few fests i have gone to in person have had MAYBE two or three quality entries.

Here there were so many more! Add the feedback from everyone and you have something that is totally invaluable.

luis has been around here for a long while, and i've talked to him a bit about DVXuser, but never participated with the site that much. i will now, what a great community!

thanks again, everybody.
