Capturing to a Kona 3 from 5D playback

I don't know if this has been tested yet (I couldn't find anything on the web)... but I'm going to give it a shot this afternoon and will report my findings.
I'll playback the footage from the 5D HDMI which is converted to HD-SDI via AJA HA5 and captured into a Kona 3 card.

Hopefully it'll be a clean full frame/ full resolution realtime capture to Apple ProRes.
I'm looking at this as more of a more traditional "log and capture" method... the upside being it's realtime transcoding while you log your footage and the downside being you'll have to have more CF cards (since you won't be able to offload after shooting) and you'll need a Kona and BlackMagic card.

Will report back with my findings.

I'm very interested in hearing your results... thanks.

Ok so I'm playing around with it today & so far it works like a charm except that I can't figure out how to disable the cameras on screen menu's / icon during playback (which obviously ruins the shot). I'm not even sure if it's possible... I'm going through the menus on the camera now.

Does anyone know if this is possible? Perhaps Magic Lantern ?

Other than the menus this could potentially be a very solid workflow, saving hours and hours.

From easy setup in FCP select:

1. Frame Rate: 1080i 29.97
2. Codec: ApplePro Res 4:2:2 (or what ever you'd like)
3. Select AJA Kona: 1080i 29.97 Apple Pro Res

Once this is set up go into "log and capture"... hit play on the camera and "capture now" in log and capture window.

In real time the footage is transcoded to Apple Pro Res.

Alright, for anyone who's interested this is definitely the fastest way to transcode your footage... especially if you've got a fair amount... it's realtime to any codec and you can log the clips into FCP simultaneously.

Essentially the 5D becomes a non-controllable deck (you have to physically press play on the camera itself before you select "capture now" in FCP.
In order to get a clean image you need to:

1. hit play on the camera

2. Immediately after selecting play press the "info" button on the camera which removes the menus and icons. (you can't select info to remove menus before selecting play).

3. select "capture now".

The quality of the footage is exactly the same if you were to transcode the footage in mpeg-streamclip or compressor.
