Capturing T2i footage...

I must be missing something simple. I can't figure out how to capture footage from my Canon T2i. Log and Capture? Nope. Log and Transfer? No. I must be missing something. There's no way I have to import the footage from iPhoto. Please help!

You have two choices:

First:
Click on your SD card icon and open the folder(s). You'll see that there are already .mov files inside. These QT movies are H.264. Drag and drop them onto your hard drive. You can use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip (freeware which most users seem to prefer over Compressor for this particular use) to convert these clips to ProRes in order prepare them for editing (H.264 is a delivery codec and shouldn't be used for editing).

Second:
There is now a plugin for Final Cut that enables you to transcode your footage directly from Final Cut. Check out this article by Philip Bloom for the link to the plugin and instructions (notice that you'll have to alter the plist settings since you're using the T2i):

Hey, thanks for the heads up!

I've done all of the following, and included the T2i in my settings, and Log and Transfer still does nothing. It's not recognizing anything. When I use L&T with the EX1, I have to hit "execute" on the camera to signify to send the files. Am I not seeing that on this camera? Ideas?

You don't use log and transfer...the plugin only works for the 5D and the 7D.

You plug the camera in via USB to mount the card. Copy the .MOV files off of the camera. They are in the h.264 format, and that isn't editable with any reliability, you need to convert them (what LOG and TRANSFER would do). Open COMPRESSOR, and drop in the footage, and in the ADVANCED FORMAT CONVERSION are the options you want. ProRes or ProRes LT.

Import the results into FCP

Well, I have the same camera, and I tried the same plugin, and it isn't working. I think people who say it is, are full of it.

(lol)

Ha! Ok, good! I've followed 3 tutorials on how it should work on two different computers with no results. I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong.

Hawk-

The EOS Plug-In for FCP works for me, so I can't speak to why it is you're having issues with it.

Either way, you may be better off transcoding in Compressor to ProRes (flavor of your choosing) than using log & transfer.

Basically, what I do is copy the entire card structure to a hard drive, then run the .MOV files through Compressor set to ProRes LT (for lots of footage) or HQ (for smaller projects).

Then it's just a matter of opening FCP, creating a new project with the appropriate ProRes settings and importing your newly-transcoded ProRes clips.

And a side-note…

When you use the EOS Plug-In for FCP, you're limited to ProRes transcoding options. But in Compressor, you can transcode into pretty much any codec available to your system.

Here's exactly what I did to make the plug-in work with T2i footage…

1. Install the new Canon EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...nloadDetailAct)

2. Go to Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/Plugins/CanonE1.RADPLug/Contents/Resources/

2. Open up cameras.plist

3. After the 7D info add the following lines of code (keeping to the coding structure):

<key>T2i</key>
<array>
<string>Canon EOS REBEL T2i</string>
</array>

4. Save the text file. Close it. Everything should work now. RESTART!!

The first time I tried it, it didn't seem to work without restarting my Mac.

Yep, that's what I have.

Here's the whole file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>1D</key>
<array>
<string>Canon EOS-1D Mark IV</string>
</array>
<key>5D</key>
<array>
<string>Canon EOS 5D Mark II</string>
</array>
<key>7D</key>
<array>
<string>Canon EOS 7D</string>
</array>
<key>T2i</key>
<array>
<string>Canon EOS REBEL T2i</string>
</array>
</dict>
</plist>

But when I open L&T, it just sits there and doesn't show me anything. Am I supposed to select the camera from something? With the EX1, it just auto loads the footage, but I see nothing with the t2i.

Here's my advice at this point: go out today and buy a cheap card reader for your SD cards. Drag and drop the .mov files from the card onto your hard drive and go from there. Your problem seems to be that you're trying to capture the footage directly from the camera and not the card itself. If you're dead set on capturing with the camera connected to your computer, however, consult the T2i manual to see if it's even possible.

My headache will be diminished, but not over. Through the above method, I would be eliminating steps. The card reader will pull the files in with h264, so I'll still need to put them all into Compressor. I tried that mpeg streamclip program but it needs to be done with individual files, or it will make it all one long file. I haven't tried compressor for this, but I will tonight.

But that doesn't answer the question. Only provides a longcut. L&T really is nice and simple. I'm a fan of that.

MPEG Streamclip does not need to be done with individual files. Go to list, then batch list, and you can add all of the files at once. However, Compressor is your best bet if you want ProRes LT files. Good luck to you.

Per request, I tried with a card reader instead of going straight from the camera. Problem solved. That fixed it. I can now Log & Transfer with the T2i footage, making it much easier as I eliminate Compressor from the equation. Many thanks, everyone!

Does this exact code work for Canon 550D too? Could someone post 550D solution please?

Many thanks

The 550D is the T2i. They're the same camera. If <string>Canon EOS REBEL T2i</string> does not work, try <string>Canon EOS 550D</string> instead.
