How do you capture High Definition footage on the computer? If I have a standard definition miniDV deck, will I be able to capture?

Hi, I'm editing videos on Premiere CS3. I have no problem capturing from SONY DCR-HC1000 mini DV. But, recently I've purchased CANON XH-A1 HD (PAL), and I have a problem with capturing format HD 1400x1080/50i... Anybody help me, please! By the way, I have no problem with capturing the same video material on EDIUS 4.5. What do I do wrong?
