Capturing "Frame Mode" with a cheaper camera?

Does anyone know if miniDV (cassette) footage shot in a "movie mode" like 24p, or more specifically the Canon GL-1's "Frame Mode" can be captured (into a computer) using a cheaper camcorder?

Long story short, my GL-1 died and I'm looking for a way to get all my miniDV tapes onto a hard drive. I thought about buying a cheap camcorder to use as a playback deck, then it occurred to me that these cameras don't necessarily have these different modes like the dvx or my gl-1.

Do you know if this would still translate, using a more basic camcorder?

Sorry if this is confusing!

Once it's on tape, it's all 1s and 0s and is encoded in a DV stream at 60i. Any deck or camcorder will play it back or transfer it into the computer.
