Capturing direct to laptop -- software + licensing?

I know that one can capture direct to a laptop via a program such as Edius Broadcast, Avid HD, etc. However, does anyone have any info the the licensing of software for such a use? It seems as if the laptop capture option is a great idea, but if you have to buy a seperate copy of your $1000+ editing package just to capture with, this isn't very economical... I believe Edius uses a hardware dongle, so that would make using it on both your laptop and desktop annoying, at best...

Any insights?

On the Mac side, the software license for FCP indicates you can only install it on one computer at one time. I cannot be installed on two computers even though only one is being used.

Avid is also a dongle, and I think Avid is even pretty nice about being able to use the same dongle on PC or Mac (not too important since HD isn't quite there on the Mac, but nice of them anyway).

Avid uses a dongle, so I think you can install Avid on as many PCs or Macs as you want, but obviously you can only run it on the one that has the dongle installed.

Not sure about Canopus, I think they use a dongle too.

The price for the Edius Broadcast is $499.00. They send you a flash memory card to plug in the usb port and you can use it on 2 computers. However there is a situation if you have Edius 3.6 with NX you have to order another cd that has Edis Pro 3 if you use on a laptop. Another $199.00 A little wierd but after calling they explained the NX software was a differant version and only worked with the NX board. Therefore It would not work on my laptop If I had 2 Desktop with NX board it would have worked.
I'm still experencing the laptop having a hard time reconizing the P2 cards in the camera. From the time I click the P2 importer it takes 4 mins for the clips to show.
No problem with inserting the P2 in the laptop.

Works wonderfull on the desktop:love4::kali::kali:

Edius Broadcast only $499? Wow, that's much cheaper than the $999 listed on Edius' site. Where did you get that at? I'll buy tonight!

A USB drive, eh? I'm wondering how that works -- perhaps it stores "activation" information on the drive, so that once you install it on two machines, you can't install it on another and still use the same dongle? Hmmm...

Sorry I misled this form. I have been and Edius NX user for over a year. Editing footage with an FX1 (Now Sold) and JVC HR1 Useing Edius 3.0 and all the free upgrades to 3.6 The upgrade to Broadcast is $499.00 .
I Purchased the HVX in Dec from B&H with 5 4 G cards . So I upgraded to Broadcast in order to Edit on my system. So far I am a satified old fart.

So in order to get the Broadcast for $499.00 you must have Edius 3.6 The broadcast just adds all the goodies for P2 capture and work with the HVX 200.
Edius is good stuff but sometimes you need to be a rocket science to figure all this crap out. The $999.00 verson will get you Edius Pro 3 and the Broadcast.

You need to call the guys at Canopus in Calif and do a little twisting the arm and mention that you are on the DVX users Form. They are real nice and maybe will give you a deal.

Sorry Guys for the misinformation.
Hell sometimes I'm so confused I don't remember my on name.

Mule

If anyone calls and finds out DVXusers can get any kind of discount, please post!! :)

[edit] I would call but even with a discount I don't have the cash to act on it at the moment, I'd feel bad if they said sure and I didn't buy.

I asked that question directly to the Apple rep Paul Saccone at the UCSF FCP/Panasonic show last tue and he told me that you can put a copy of FCP studio on one of your home/studio computers and one on one laptop at the same time. So this is a grey area. I think the big issue with Apple is that you have paid for your copy of FCP, not used a pirated copy.

From my experience if you install FCP studio 5 on a desktop/laptop it works fine (no idea about the legality of that though) as long as both computers are not connected to the same network. If both are on the same network you can only open up FCP on one machine at a time.

This could probably easily be "fixed" by figuring out which port FCP listens over the network on and blocking it on your router.
