Capturing 720p/pn direct to FCP (HVX-202EN)

finally got a chance to play around with my new hvx today (not very exciting watching the cats thump port adelaide eh?).

shot 720pn, simpy mounted the p2 on my mac by putting it in mcr/vcr mode then holding down the mode button for 2 seconds, which sent it into pc mode. then it was just a case of importing it via the panasonic p2 import window in fcp.

no worries. you've tried doing it this way, right?

With DV Rack 2.0 HD, stripping the duplicate frames is a user-selectable option. The way you configure it is kind of goofy, it clearly was an afterthought.

Here is how it works: in the recorder menu is an option that lets you select between Type 1 and Type 2 AVI files to allow you to create files that are compatible with your NLE. However, since DVCProHD can only be saved in Type 2 files, the Type 1 vs. Type 2 option takes on a different and non-obvious meaning for DVCProHD: if you set the AVI Type to Type 1, DV Rack will still create a Type 2 file, but it will strip out the duplicate frames.

This is documented in the online help, but few people are aware of it.

whoop looks like you may be a little confused......I dug this out of the dv rack manual

Conservation-Conscious—Auto-Removal of Pulldown Frames: If you're shooting at a frame rate below the camera's native frame rate (such as 24P), DV Rack automatically skips the "extra" frames to keep the size of your clip files down. With the Panasonic HVX200/202, while DV Rack does not work with the two PN modes due to limitations of the camera, it effectively records native clips. In this version of DV Rack, the removal of pulldown frames is automatic; there is no way to prevent the frames from being removed.* That option will be added in a future version. Because DV Rack has already removed the pulldown frames, be sure to disable pulldown in your NLE so that it does not remove additional frames.

it does say there is an acception with dvcproHD, that recording in type1 will "not" drop the frames. Cool:thumbsup:

I'm not confused, the feature exists and is documented in the help file -- you conveniently left out the footnote that goes along with the asterisk at the end of the section you marked in yellow:

*The exception is DVCPro video from the HVX200/202—with DV File Format set to AVI Type 1, all frames will be recorded (and as noted above, the clip will be AVI Type 2).

*(once again off topic, i discovered a nasty glitch with the labelling: in the panasonic p2 import window i labelled all the clips before importing them. i soon discovered that roughly a quarter of the clips simply weren't being imported; their filenames would appear in the capture scratch folder along with everything that was successfully imported, but with truncated names and a size of 4kb. however, when i imported them without labelling them, it all worked fine.)

In reply to this glitch, its a PITA. I work a university where our third year students onwards use the HVX202. That glitch is due to FCP only being able to take in a file name that is a certain length. You just have to be short and succicnt with your file names. bit of a pain, because there really isnt any notice to say that the file name is too long or anything, it just doesnt work. I dont know the exact length, but its not great, about 15 to 20 characters i think.
