Capture Dvx100B tape with DV2500 deck

I have a Panasonic AG-DV2500 DV deck that I use for tape capture from my DVX100B to FCP7. The deck can display a menu system to allow the user to adjust a number of settings in the deck as well as check head hours, etc.. According to the deck manual (pg52), the menu is displayed on a separate monitor fed from either S video or composite video. No mention of the DV output being able to carry the menu signal.

Well folks, all of my current monitors accept either VGA, DVI, or HDMI.

Has anyone out there discovered if the deck DV output can be made to carry the menu system or am I just knockin' on heaven's door?

The last thing I want to do is buy yet another monitor just to see the menu system.

Any help Appreciated,

Ken

You don't have a regular, ol' TV set laying around? If it's just to see the menu, there's no need to worry about using an accurate production monitor.

I've only ever been able to get menu and display items out via the RCA composite. Firewire doesn't seem to carry those signals.

Alex, I do have a TV set but it's 60 feet away in another room and weighs about 60 #. You're right, I'm not concerned with with accuracy of display.

ekuseni, that's good to know. I do have a vintage 1980 RCA CRT TV/monitor that accepts composite video but it's so heavy & big I don't have space in the studio I'll figure out a way to use that if I can't come up with something more compact.

I'm going online to see if there is such a beast as an S-video to VGA adapter, but if anyone out there knows of one , please let me know.

ADS Tech DVD Xpress box accepts S video or composite and displays via USB on PC screen, don't know about Mac. It's available on eBay, I have the older first version (need to get latest drivers from ADSTech website). I'd guess that any capture card that has S video or composite input, inserted into a PC would work, assume one can get the same for a mac

wjauch,

Thanks for the reply! I just checked it out online and it could do the trick for $49.95. From reading the info on the ADS website it looks like the unit was designed more for folks who want to record the incoming video direct to disk, but I just might have a different use for it, so thanks again.

I also discovered a Sabrent S video or composite video to VGA converter on Walmart, of all places, for $29.99, so it's going to win by default if I can't find anything else that 's cheaper. Adapters from S video appear to plentiful so I won't have to purchase a smaller monitor with the right inputs after all.
