Hey guys,

I am wondering if i can directly capture Video from the T2i into a Hardrive. Id like to know, so i could mount a Hard Drive to my Rig and dont have to deal with SD Cards.

Thanks

Ah, I like this. I too would like to know. Ive never heard anyone try with a DSLR. Maybe because its not possible?

I don't think it's possible...

the closest thing I know about would be an eye-fi card, but those have many issues

No. The camera does not support usb host as far as I can tell... so there's really no way for it to interface with any external media at all.

Better idea would be to record hdmi output to an external recorder, like a computer or firestore- effectively getting around the 4gb limit. But that isn't possible yet either since getting clean hd live output is proving a challenge.

Sorry, sd is all u got

this solved it

Does it shoot full HD out of the HDMI? I thought it was under 1920 x 1080?

I'm pretty sure the t2i outputs 1080 to an external monitor until you hit record. Then it drops down to something like standard def, due to a hardware limitation in the video processor. Technically, an alternative would be to never hit record on the camera, and just take the live 1080 HD preview feed out to an external recorder.
The problem with this is as follows (if I recall correctly- I last looked into this before I bought the camera):
1) The display is not "clean", ie. there are menu options and data overlayed on the display which will appear on the external monitor (and therefore recording) as well.
2) The camera will shut itself off after not pressing anything for a while to save battery.
The first two options can actually be resolved with Magic Lantern, as you can tell it to leave the camera on and remove most of the overlays (not sure if they managed to get rid of the rectangle in the middle, but I think there was a build that did). But leaves one final problem:
3) I think it wasn't 1080p in live output. Maybe 1080i, if that even makes sense? There was some kind of degraded signal going out to preview, that made the rest of the details not worth trying to get around in the end.

I don't think there's a lot of people recording from that hdmi signal, and that tells me a lot

if you're really, really into recording directly to a hard disk, in theory it can be done, but I don't know any place where you can find the bits you'll need...

the idea would be to use an adaptor that it exactly the oposite of this:
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=sd+sata&_sacat=See-All-Categories

i.e. on one end you'd have an SD card without the inner bits, just some connections, going to a cable that's what would come out of the camera, and into a host card, which on the other end would be connected to a SATA HDD or SSD

with CF cards, it's a lot easier, as I think there are dumb mechanical adapters that allow you to plug a card into the IDE port of a PC, so the reverse adapter should be easy to develop

right now I don't think it makes any sense to go into all this trouble, just get some extra cards and live with them

and keep this idea on the back of your minds for the time when RAW video comes to life...
