Caprock Anti-Moire Filters

Isaac, about the sharpness, is the filter only usable for close ups and mediums or is there enough sharpness left for establishing external shots ? If not asking too much, would it be possible to post a full res 1080p frame grab of a very wide shot or at least a full shot with and without the filter?
Thanks in advance. This filter may be the "solution" we are all looking for.

I also had good results with the cokin system, using the netties 143 and 145, especially the 143 quits a lot of moiré though there is some softness, too. But you will get a nice, not TOO soft look, maybe desireable for some some your stuff.

My 2.0 came today. ... a quick test on this piece of fabric in my room that brings out the worst moire looked promising. ... A 2 is the best tradeoff between elimination and sharpness. ...

Hi Isaac: Thanks very much for posting preliminary results/impressions from your testing.

"J" brings up an interesting question here:

Do you have any idea if focal length has a significant impact on which strength CapRock filter one "should" use?

Again, your efforts on this topic are much appreciated!

Actually yes, I wouldn't use this on my telephoto lenses. I'd really only use this on my 28mm or a 35mm. The blurring is unacceptable on my 135mm lens but it's not an issue on my 28mm. I'm sure there's an explanation for this but I don't know why that's the case. I don't really notice moire on my 50mm, or rather I'm not really shooting wides on a 50 so the Caprock isn't really needed there. I haven't had moire issues for what I've shot so far, just when shooting wides and that's when I'll break this out and use it.

I'll post some footage when I have some free time. I'm working on a feature script so that takes precedence over Caprock tests at the moment. I'll find some nice juicy moire stricken brick buildings to shoot soon enough.

could you use this with another filter like the fader nd? how would you stack them? would you need the double filter ring to put the fader in front of the anti-moire

I have a Soft-FX #.5 # 1 & #2. I have stacked them together on video cameras. They work well to soften the nasty video look on older SD broadcast cameras and don't blur the image too much because of the dimple design in the glass as apposed to etched glass filters. The .5 is very light but useful.
As for the question about stacking with a fader ND I'm not sure what size that filter is, but these are standard 72mm thread front and back.
Maybe someone at Caprock is listening to this post and can tell us the advantages of their anti-aliasing filters over the Soft-FX design, and what does the Caprock anti-aliasing filter actually do technically.

I've been speaking to the caprock people and they now offer a 4x4 glass filter at the 2.0 range, but it's limited to 3"x3" of the glass... Kinda lame, but better than nothing.

I've shot a ton of brick building clips, just need to cut something together and post to vimeo. Will have a clip up soon.

Wow...that shot at 3:20 is a great stress test! I say the Caprock passed!

Bummer they don't appear to offer 77mm screw-in filters. A caprock 2.0 would be an essential accessory for my Tokina 11-16.

Definitely considering getting one of these after some crummy 5D aliasing/moire difficulties. One question though, does anyone see any reason why the effect of the 2.0 would be different on the 5D as opposed to the 7D used here?

Seems like there would be quite a few of us interested in 72/77mm circulars...
Have you been speaking with them Isaac? Is there a chance they'll "expand" their options as these DSLRs become more popular....and folks figure out "moire?"
I'm definitely in for a couple, but I have nothing in 67mm. Maybe time for a 4x4....those start to take away from the "discrete" factor though:)

I hope they expand, I haven't talked to them yet but I'd definitely like a 77mm version. 67mm definitely limits the lens choices.

Ok, so since no one responded to my question about differences between the 5D and the 7D for filter strength, I have taken the plunge and ordered a 2.0. As I too have Contax Zeiss lenses as well as Canon the filter size is actually not an issue (they are 67mm). However, since this may be a standard intensity (2.0) for many DSLR's I see no reason why they couldn't produce merely this one filter value in the 77mm format, rather than the whole range of other filter strengths.

Looking forward to the results. Can you shoot a before & after shot so we can see what the damaged image looks like. (Special orders, I know, sorry.) If you wouldn't mind. Thanks.
