Caprock anti moire filter

By the way, something very important that I found against moire. The Picture Style Profiles make a huge difference. When I created a profile based around neutralising a middle gray as much as possible in an image and then turned down the sharpness, contrast and saturation, it killed a lot of the rainbow aspect of the moire. Pumping all that back up in post, did not reveal a rainbow. This says to me that chromatic aberration is playing a large part in these artifacts, which is then picked up and exaggerated by the artificial sharpening and saturation in camera.

That's a good point about the cameras sharpness & contrast setups.
With enough tests you could probably find the right amount for every type of scene. (Can the custom setups be added to a preset file in the cameras memory?) This would probably help the Caprock clean the image even better. What ever subtle amounts are still there could be smoothed out in post.

OK, n1.0 works fine with my 28mm Carl Zeiss. My initial feeling is that the blurness has to do mainly with contrast redaction and secondly with sharpness. I am off to more testing.

I was corect, it sure needs contrast 2. But I was wrong about sharpness. It needs 4 and above to bring it to life. I prefer 6 where I find 7 way over the top. By the way I have noticed and in other occasion that from 6 to 7 it is much bigger difference the from 5 to 6.

Overall I am very very happy with Caprock n1.0 Actually I am ecstatic.

How does the 1.0 work with other focal lengths? 24mm or wider where your DOF is much greater normally.

I cannot fit the filter to my wider lenses. I only tried it with a 35mm and it also works. With my 28mm (I made hundreds off shots, using every setting possible) lets say it reduces aliasing by 78% which to my taste is the difference from an unusable image to a usable one. It eliminates any rainbow effect completely but there is still some aliasing in edges. Unfortunately I will not be able to have a connection from my PC to my HD projector for quite a while so I cannot comment with more confidence on how this effects the final image on a larger scale. But in my 23 inch monitor everything looks much much better. Another surprising finding is that it seems that it eliminates noise ! I have some more tests on my schedule.

That's promising news. Anything that reduces the problem by a noticeable percentage is good. What size filter are you using?
My question about different focal length lenses would apply also to longer lenses.
If the 1.0 filter is able to correct moire on your 28mm, would it have the same effect on longer lenses such as a 50mm, 85mm, 100mm etc. , or would a different Caprock filter be needed to achieve better results? I realize you are just testing this filter, but something to keep in mind while doing additional tests.
What were some of the different settings you tried, and which ones worked best in terms of contrast and sharpness to reduce moire, aliasing & noise?

Thanks Rockmore, I already have all this in mind. The filter that Caprock is selling is unfortunately only 67mm. They sell 4X4 with a 3X3 working surface if I am not mistaken but I do not use mattebox for lighter setup. My wide lenses either have permanent hoods or are 72mm. My conclusion is that for the 28mm we definitely need something stronger in order to achieve the 50mm results. The problem is that it does not exist. About my settings, there is a lot of debate in witch profile is better to use or create etc. and I am not planning to contribute to this, especially since I find the default settings off the camera 100% inaccurate in any aspect but the majority use them anyhow. So, color calibrate with a valid method and if you are done, attach the filter and then add some contrast and a lot off sharpness and your result will be almost identical as before, but with the filter's benefits.

Alvise tedesco: Your welcome! I don't have a 7D. n2.0 does absolutely nothing with 5D Mark2, that's why exchange it with n.1.0

I can safely say that there is no use for n1.4 from 28mm to 50mm since n.1.0 contrast and sharpness issues can be fixed and still the filter is not hard enough for our purpose.

Asking them the same, they told me that yes, and there is no possibility for anything stronger because tooling costs are prohibited.

Good job with the tests. This will at least correct some of the problems with some lenses for now. This along with other contrast & sharpening adjustments as well as post corrections should get us all on the right track.
I suspect there will be more software improvements soon. Canon can't just let this go as is forever, They do still have a reputation to keep up.

I've just tested the Caprock 1.4. Here is a sample link on Vimeo:

http://www.vimeo.com/8990500

Shot on a C/Y Zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens. (67mm filter thread).
NO sharpening added in camera or in post.

Looks better, but does not completely eliminate the moire. Not sure how this stacks up against the Caprock 1.0...

I am especially wondering what you think Andreas!
