Cant get realtime on MacBook Pro & FCP Studio

Hey folks,

First time posting here, hope to get some help. I just purchased a MBP 17" with 2 gigs of ram and an external Lacie d2 Extreme hard drive. I've connected the drvie to the FW800 port, and I'm importing HVX footage at 720p. The problem is, I'm not getting realtime editing. Just basic playback with no effects is very choppy.

I was told the new MBP and Final cut studio (universal) was quite capable of handling 720p clips in realtime.

I'm new to Final Cut, so I'm sure I"ve got something setup wrong - but what?

Anyone out there know what to do?

I'm not a Mac guy, but the first thing I'd try is to to take the external drive out of the equation -- work with a local file and see if that is realtime. If it isn't, then your FCP settings probably aren't compatible with the material you are editing, and it's rendering.
 
There has to be something setup wrong. I do all of my editing externally on my Macbook Pro 15inch 2.0ghz 256mb Video ram. 1 gig ram.

I have just a USB 2.0 300gb that i edit from, and i can Flip the M2 footage, add color correction and some contrast filters and it still plays back in real time at Full Resolution on the Macbook and on an External HDTV i have hooked up via DVI. Theres something wrong there
 
I have been able to handle 720p on a Powerbook G4, so something could be wrong here. Set your RT for Dynamic RT and Safe RT. I always recommend doing a Render Only -> Mixdown and just that rendering of the audio gives me smooth playback even on my slower notebook.

Even though I don't have a Macbook Pro yet, I've seen with my own eyes 3 realtime streams of 720 24p playing back with effects applied off of a simple external firewire 400 drive... so yes, something is wrong... :)

I only work with 1080 on my MBPro and have not run into any stuttering or choppiness. I too have the 2 gigs of ram but am running a G-Sata drive via a Seri-tek expresscard/34 adapter. I agree it sounds like there may be a problem with your settings... perhaps your timeline is not set the same as your camera acquisition format.

Contact me off board, I'll run you through checking some set ups. It's a bit more than I'm willing to type out here. But I can walk you thorugh it.
