Canon's version of the 150??

Canon's announced the XA10 for march shipping... $1999.

B&H has a rundown.

A glance at the features looks like it's very comparable to the 150, for $1k less. I was seriously eyeing the 150 - any of you 150 users want to glance at the posted specs and share your thoughts? Got my hands on a Sony HVR-Z7U HDV machine so I could wait for a while...

Looking at the 150 to supplement the DSLRs with a real-video form factor machine with XLRs. This looks interesting. Zebras, waveform, touch-screen focus, AVCHD, etc... March shipping supposedly. They also announced a pro-sumer version, no handle or XLRs but feature rundown looks similar - $1499.

(Sorry if this is a cross-post, asked about it in the Canon area, but curious to see what HMC-150 users think).

I saw the title of the post, and thought it was gonna be that Canon was releasing a 3 CCD/CMOS chip AVCHD camera in an XH-A1 form factor. This looks more like an HV20 on steroids.

Being a single 1/3 CMOS sensor camera, I kind of doubt this will do as well as the HMC150 in low light.

It really looks more comparable to the HMC40 than the 150. A few things right off the bat:

No 60p?
10x zoom vs 13x zoom
Probably not wide angle
One focus/zoom wheel, not mechanical?
ND filters?
1 custom key vs 3

And of course there are harder-to-define things like ergonomics, manual control efficiency (a control doesn't help as much when it's buried in a menu), durability, etc.

It does have record time going for it. But I've never needed to record more than 8 hours without stopping to switch out a card, so...

To be honest it looks like a beefed up consumer camera. There's a world of subtleties bridging the gap between "beefed up consumer" and "prosumer".

Thanks for bringing it up, though. Hadn't heard about it.

Exactly right. As is TigerFX.

I can only assume the OP confused the 150 with the 40.

Not so much confused, the 150 is the model I've been more focused on, but the responses where the sort of things I was wondering about - rather than comparing lists of specs, getting a take from 150 users.

Looks like manual controls are menu based, etc - no iris ring far as I can tell. I'd definitely like something that keys in the same range of a DSLR or better - the aliasing is what kills me with compositing DSLR footage, I find you can get a key that the kids who just dumped their DV cams think is amazing, but it's very hard to get something that holds up to serious scrutiny. Still poking around in the $2-$3k price range.

If keying is a major concern for your work, then maybe snag an HMC-40 or potentially this Canon, and spend the extra cash for an external HDMI recorder (with 4:2:2).

Yeah, it looks like an HMC 40 type device, except with an HV40 base. Removable handle with xlr looks like the only "pro" part of it.
