Canon's next release

I feel like reading too much about gh2 vs 60d is about to stress me out to the max. I have no overhead investment in lenses right now... I own one lens... so its not really a big deal for me to switch brands to Panasonic from my current t2i but honestly Canon is just going to leapfrog the GH2 with whatever comes out next so I am kinda thinking I will just hold out with my t2i and wait and see what canon does next. So does anyone know when Canon would make their next announcement?
Right now what is attracting me to the GH2 is no file limit and audio metering on the screen for audio. But the lack of fast lenses bothers me and I feel like if I made a Canon investment in lenses that would be smarter...
thoughts????

I've been shooting the 550D since March. It's been a real workhorse for a supposed toy. I carry it everywhere I go and average about one 8gig card a day. Very tough little camera. I'm sure the GH2 is also impressive but the smaller sensor won't make it for me anymore. I'm still holding out for the next 5D as my primary camera because the only place to go for ultra wide is FF with the 550D as backup.

If you don't really need another camera, stick with yours. I guess Canon's next vDSLR will be 5DmarkII successor, but it probably won't be anywhere near until summer next year.

The 60d came out just a few months ago, and they didn't address file limits or metering on it. Maybe the 5dmk3 or a 7dmk2 is around the corner, but those of course are in a much higher price bracket.

I have to agree. I have a 60D now (had T2i before that which almost the same - command dial, larger VF w/ interchangeable focusing screen, and swivel LCD.. IQ=same). And I am just working on my lens collection as I wait for the 5Diii. Sensors are getting bigger all the time so I don't see investing in lenses with a smaller image circle. In fact, I bet MAmiya and Hasselblad lenses are the next big thing when these DSLRs start making medium format with video capabilities. I am pretty sure full frame will be enough for what I am doing for now, so I am staying with L lenses and Leica vintage primes.

Unless Canon comes out with a mirrorless micro 4/3rds I think Panasonic is going to eat their lunch since I think m4/3rds is the sweet spot for handheld HD video today.

To be honest, its a tough choice, but the thing to remember is that the G series records with an interlaced wrapper, which is a little confusing, and I think they also are no longer hackable if I remember right. For the 60D, it does have audio controls to set up before hand, and all of the features of the 7D (dedicated white balance, ISO, histogram) plus a RAW editing mode to play with on the go, not to mention the swivel screen. Also, while the GH2 is a tad sharper, Canon lenses aren't the best, so I have to say the few tests so far may be a bit more hindered by glass - I saw a stunning test once where a Nikon lens on the Canon made the world of difference. But to be honest, its totally up to you, I just bet that so far, it may be still best to stick with Canon for DSLR filmmaking. Might want other opinions, though.

You could just get Nikon lenses with manual iris rings and they will work with both the current Canon cameras and the current Panasonic cameras.

I've been reading your posts for a week or two now. And it just strikes me that you really just don't understand a lot of this.

1. It sounds like you needed a video camera, not a DSLR
2. The m43 cameras can use any lens the Canon can, and more.
3. You can buy fast glass for any of these cameras and use them
4. NONE of these cameras do audio very well. That is pointed out in nearly every thread about them
5. Stop stressing and go shoot. Seriously.

jrod,

I have been in your shoes (and will be again I am sure).
I gather from your other threads and posts that you just got
a good paying gig and you want to be a pro.
So in a way, you are doing what I would do (and have done)
which is get on forums and ask a lot of questions. Try to gain
information and knowledge.

A lot of gear to choose from. . . almost too many choices it seems
(at least when I am trying to decide). But you can do the job that
you described with any of the cameras and gear that you choose.
Each have there limits, some more than others, but they will all deliver
a solid product (at least based on the job description). The key is to get
to know the gear you choose. (As I suggested on another thread- AF100 or
as a second the HMC150, which to me would ultimately be the least complicated).

The more you shoot (with systematic analysis of your workflow and results)
The more you will know (for yourself).

Time will fly while you are learning and before you know it you will be helping
others like PerroneFord does.

Perrone,

I really appreciate the knowledge and experience you bring.
I have read countless posts of yours.
they are typically direct, succinct, and helpful.

You can be a tough guru sometimes, but you are good
instructor. If everyone left the forum(s) after gaining a
higher level of skill, we would all be struggling.

Thanks

If you need a camera right now then purchase the best you can afford that will do what you need. If you need nothing then wait til you do. If you have money to spare you could buy one of each which is the preferred method. If not, your going to have to be prepared to sacrafice something or more. Remember... THERE IS NO PERFECT CAMERA and waiting for one or looking will make you crazy. Look at the footage, study the specs and read what users say with a grain of salt as many of them have motives to their advice per their investments. Finally be prepared for some sort of buyers remorse not too long after your purchase as something newer and better is announced or released. Enjoy !

I need to be less grumpy. Hard sometimes. Thanks for the kind words.

perr- you have helped me in the past on other items (a long pm about lenses is still in my folder actually from you). i appreciate the help. i do overanalyze and i hate making a bad decision. sorry if it has gotten annoying but it has all been helpful... thanks again

Instead of sitting on a forum all day stressing and getting questionable advice from strangers, how about you just get out and start shooting stuff? When I first bought my camera I spent hours on here researching follow focuses and matte boxes and all of that useless ****. Don't yourself a favor, stay away from the forums for a couple weeks, and instead of worrying about gear, worry about fine tuning your craft. That will have a much bigger effect on the final product than the camera you're using.

Well, I've heard rumblings of a 5DIII announcement in Sept 2011. Whatever, I wouldn't even think about another DSLR until Canon has incorporated DigicV which will hopefully resolve any aliasing/moire issues remaining. By all accounts, the GH2 has reduced these codec issues. I'm hoping DigicV will be even better.

It's cool that the GH2 has the audio meter levels visible while in record mode, but no headphone jack to actually hear audio while it's being recorded is a deal breaker and severely limits these cams if you're not interested in doing double system sound. Resolve the moire/aliasing and add a headphone jack, and I'll consider another DSLR. Until then, it looks like I'm heading toward the AF100.

As someone who came from the land of videocameras, I was super apprehensive about doing dual system audio, but with a Zoom + Pluraleyes it couldn't be easier. It's not even something I think about anymore.

And OP...I just reread and saw that you already have a t2i! what's wrong with it?? If you're constantly looking for something better you'll never be satisfied. Or good. Just get out and SHOOT!
