Canon's 4K Cinema EOS Official Announcement & Latest Info-NAB 2012

LOL Jarred and Jim are people very different of the average fanboy, believe me. I traded some private messages with Jim in the beginning before reduser, here and in another forum, he's a great guy. Jarred, idem (I really miss his posts on dvxuser, he knows it once we've been in touch through email). But the fact is they've been doing history. RED is one of the most interesting companies I've ever known. Reason enough when you become client, you don't care about anything else. I am here because I am committed with training/education/consulting for motion picture and TV business. Only if I know very well what the market has to offer, someone will believe me ;-)

Street price will be closer to 10k € imho...

Honestly, if the 1D 4K came out at $10,000AUD (Australian Dollars) street-price, I will seriously consider buying it over the FS700. $10K is my absolute limit - virtually every penny I have in the bank. However, for those that live in Australia, we know all too well that we always get screwed on price...

Exactly my thoughts just posted on reduser:

The price will be lower when released. I'd say about the $12,000 (€9,000) mark -- as same difference as happened with the C300, I bet.
C300 was announced at 16000 and it still is now.

I remember it quite clearly. Lotsa canon fanboys were angry at the unofficial announcement of 16k. They keep saying its not official and the distributors are wrong. boom its 16k on release day.

Can only comment on the C300 - but I got mine cheaper than US. Though theyre starting at $15K so maybe $12k ?

C300 was announced at $20k.

IIRC, at announcement it was rumored to be $20K, but no official price was spoken; then the official price came out, and it was $16K
for the 1DC, we've already heard the official price: $15K

(can't confirm any of this now: the usa.canon.com site seems to be down)

Actually, after a shoot I had a Treyarch a couple days ago, I realized the real money is in video games. Angry Birds Space anyone?

Not in the UK. Games programmers tend to get paid less than those doing more mainstream software engineering work.

It's different in the US, if you want to compare their salary figures. In fact, I've got a feeling that at current exchange rates a fairly junior programmer there will earn more than most leads over here.

Anyway, I got out of the industry after getting ripped off by a publisher. I did many months of work, spent much of the time on the receiving end of threats from them, handed over a nearly complete project, and didn't get paid a penny. Not fun, and I've run into others who had the same experience with that (no longer extant) lot.

These companies throw out these high mark up prices just to see if we will take the bait. if enough people say no thanks then trust they will adjust pricing accordingly. I'm adding my no thanks to the $15,000 price tag.

Regarding the history of the C300 price announcement...

In the pre-announcements there was no indication of pricing at all. As the press event started, DVInfo went live with their article, and that article said "priced at about $16,000". People here flipped out, saying "no way will it be $16k" etc., while Canon was still holding their event and it was all still going on. People said "that $16k is fake, Canon didn't say $16k, etc". Then, at the very end of the big November 3rd Hollywood event, Canon said "Price: $20k".

There was much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. And when the price was announced at $20k, DVInfo updated their article to reflect the official announcement of the Canon event.

Then, a couple of months later in January, they promised an announcement of price and shipping date. When that announcement came, it was $16k, which is where it remains today.
