Canon XL1 without Remote!!!

I'd like to know about Canon XL1.
If there is no wireless Canon XL1 remote, what function will it be missing or cannot perform?

Cause I'm think to buy a used Canon XL1 (however, it has no wireless remote.)

I don't know if i would miss something if decide to buy it.

Are there any substitute remote for the original remote included from manufacturer?

Has anyone had a sample of shooting from XL1?

Thank you

The reason that I"m asking question about remote is that some functions(that I heard) can be only disabled by remote only like If I want to toggle off recording date and time. Is it some other way to toggle that off/on without using a remote?

Is there any Canon XL1 manual website availalbe on the internet anymore?

I'm pretty sure you can do that in the camera menu. It would be pretty dumb for Canon to assign something like that to a remote that you can lose.

Tell that to any company that's made a TV, VCR, or DVD player in the last twenty years... ;)

Seriously, though, in my experience with the XL1S, I have yet to come across anything that can't be done in the menu without the remote. It's handier sometimes, but not necessary.

Here is what I read from Watchdog at http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/tips.php

"The Watchdog notes:

If you're recording time code during your shoot, you'll always see the time code numbers running in the viewfinder, they can't be switched off. However, you may not want the number display to go out over your cables (to a remote recording deck during a multiple-camera shoot, for instance), which they will unless you've remembered to bring along your XL1's wireless remote control. Aim it at the back of the camera and press the "on screen" button. This will toggle off (or on) the display information going through the video outputs...."

Does it mean that I only need to use a remote to toggle that off?

Again, this is on the XL1S, but you can do the same thing as the "on screen" button by going to "DISP. SETUP" in the menu and selecting the "TV SCREEN" function. This is definitely one of those things that is easier with the remote, I'll grant you.

I would guess, BTW, that a Canon dealer could probably get you a new remote if you decided to buy this camera. You might want to check with one and see what the price is before you buy this camera so you know what to expect--remotes have a way of being pricier than you'd think.
