Canon xhg1...does it have an expanded focus option?

Hi, I was doing a shoot for a luxury items store today with my canon xh g1 camera and I needed to get a focus on some intricate details such as the diamonds in the GUESS watches and bags they carried. Unfortunately I was unable to do it extremely close up as I was unable to get a proper focus on such things (looked blurry close up even as I tried to adjust the manual zoom)

Now I understand the sony cameras like the z1's have an expanded focus feature that allow you a few seconds to get a proper focus on very indepth areas such as the eyes of someone or in this case, the diamonds in the watches and bags.

Does my canon have such a feature? And if not, what can you guys recommend me to do in a circumstance like this?

Thank you.

The G1 is pretty much the same camera as the A1, but has the jack pack. You've described two issues, both the same for these two cameras, and nearly the same as the H1 also.

First, for focusing there is a focus assist on the left hand side of the camera, along that ridge in middle of the camera. You press that button and you will see a zoomed in view in order to focus. You have to do it BEFORE you start recording. Also, the zoomed in/expanded view is not recorded.

Second, the G1 and A1 cannot focus with the camera as close as some cameras can. It doesn't have a macro setting. Many people found this out when trying to use a 35mm DOF adapter. They needed either a flip or achromat in order to focus on the GG.

Instead it has a much longer zoom than most cameras (20x instead of 10-13x). Get back 3' and zoom in on the object, then you'll be able to focus. (For the H1 it depends on which lens you have.)

Thank you for the assistance with the Magn. Button, now I know what my 'expanded focus' option is on the camera.

In the circumstance of close up focusing,

What if I used a wide angle lens? Do you think that would assist in the focusing at such a close range?

Alright, now I have the knowledge of this. Now I know to step back 3' and then do my zoom.

At least knowing this I'm in a better position to work my camera, thank you for the assistance guys.

Anyone uses this camera on shoots, how do you find it for your needs?

Were you injured by your Canon camera?

Lol. But I've been seeing a lot of these similar post about the forums. Someone register, make a few posts in a random thread that only vaguely relates to the topic at hand and they conveniently includes a link to some businesses semi-hidden in the post. This just looks odd to me.
