Hi Guys,

I recently bought a Canon XH-A1s. I used to use a Sony Z1.

I dont know what im doing wrong but im getting slight grain in my picture.

I am using a Brevis Adapter on it, but im 99% sure its not the Brevis because I get slight grain when the Brevis is off.

Here's what i've checked.

AGC is off.
The gain is set yo "L" and in the setup L is "0.0.
I use it on FUll manual and have my Shutter at 25 and working the Iris well.

The Brevis adapter is on.

Here is a real quick test shot

As you can see im still getting grain.

Is there something im missing on the camera's settings?

I really appreciate any feedback thanks.

Sean.

Hey Rob,

Well the setting of this camera is different to the Z1 with white balance. I first tried it with AWB on. Then I tried it with AWB off, set the white balance to preset and used the switch under the lcd area.

Unless theres another way im not sure of I think I did the white balance correctly.

Cheers.

The gain can actually be set to -3db which is the mimimum, should yield a cleaner picture. Check that the "L" gain setting is assigned to this value, it's 0 db by default.

But what I'm seeing here is mainly due to the picture being underlit. It's not really "grain" from the adapter; it's noise from the camera sensor. Most of the noise are in darkly lit area (i.e the chair) where not enough light is reaching it to clear the sensor's noise floor. Note that there's little to no noise in the highlight and the midtone (i.e the gray floor). Lowering the gain and increasing light level should yield a cleaner picture.

cheers bud,

I didnt even think of dropping the db lower. I will try dropping it to -3.

Appreciate your help.

Yeah I noticed the same issue. Canon doesn't seem to think 0db should be no gain. I also have to set it to -3db 0db +3db.
