Canon Xh A1 Noise

Hello:

I'm new to HDV and the company I work for has rented a Canon XH A1 for a few days for an interview shoot. I took this camera out for some test shots in nice daylight and was taken aback by the quality of the images that I was getting. The Images have been kind of washed out (not much contrast) and they have a good helping of grainy noise.
I've tried all the white balance techniques (auto, white card, and manual Kelvin adjustment). The gain is on low setting or auto.

I'm wondering if there is a setting on the camera that I have missed or is HDV just not that impressive. I prefer the white balance and color I got out of my old GL1.

Any hints or input would be appreciated.

Thanks

JW

If you're shooting in any AUTO mode, you usually won't get the best possible images. Switch to Manual (M) and adjust the iris ring by hand. You can always use the focus assist if you need auto focusing in that mode. If you're oudoors, you'll likely need to turn on one of the ND filters as well. This will help prevent that washed out look.

THe A1 is cabpable of some gorgeous HDV....just search the forum and see for yourself. However, the A1 is definately not a point and shoot camera. You need to learn how to use it to get the best out of it. If you just want ease of use, perhaps your company should rent an HV 30 instead.

You might want to read the stickies, turn AGC off, get yourself some nice pre-sets and you´ll never look bad. At least I didn´t and I´m just starting to explore the possibilities.
