Canon XH-A1 and Final Cut

I am using a Canon XH-A1 and Final Cut 6.02. About 90% of time I hook my camera up to my computer (MBP) Final Cut wont recongnize my camera is connected via firewire. I did the easy setup and everything is on its correct settings and I know it works because every now and then it will recognize it. I shot in 24F, the camera says HDV/DV IN, On easy setup I have Format: HDV, Use: HDV-1080p24 FireWire Basic, Rate: (all rates). Why is it doing this? Am I doing something wrong?

I couldn't get fce 3.5 to recognize the XHA1 and it was really frustrating. I kept getting the message: "Unable to initialize HDV deck". Finally, after about 4 hours, I "reset" the camera, and then it worked. I had to re-enter my custom function presets, though.

Change Playback STD to [HDV]

Change Playback STD to [HDV]

The answer to this problem may be that you need to set the A1 to "Playback STD" [HDV]. I think the camera defaults to [Auto], which apparently confuses FCP and makes the A1 not connect properly.

Basically you turn the A1 dial to VCR mode, go into the menus, and change the setting. Note that [Playback STD] may be greyed out if a Firewire cable is plugged into your A1, so unplug the Firewire first.

The procedure is found on page 109 of the A1 manual:

"When outputting the camcorder's video signal to the computer:
HDV Video output: Set [PLAYBACK STD] to [HDV] and [HD-DOWN-CONV] to [OFF]."

I bet this will solve the problem.

???

???

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately none of that has solved the problem. It wont even recognize my camera in imovie and I just got a new firewire cable. So I am thinking it is something with the camera? Any more Ideas!!!

Have you tried trashing the preferences in Final Cut Pro?

try a firewire card. i have found sometimes the firewire port on the motherboard doesnt wanna work sometimes and a cheap card normally does the trick.

Nope not yet...I have not yet tried to get a firewire card for my mbp like someone mentioned above I am going to try to connect my camera to someone else computer first before I buy a firewire card.

I went to FCP 6.0 stayed at 10.4.11 and 7.3.1 QT and it has finally worked. I would continue to make sure the camera settings are right and you turn off and back on after making changes. If you make adjustments and close out FC and reopen this will not help. Make sure you are turning off the camera and closing program before restarting. Whatever actually made things work for me I am not sure (I was at FCP 5.1 and it worked for a little while then quit), but thought I would throw it out there. I know it gets frustrating, so hang in there.
