Hi Friends. My latest work for a folk singer from the Brother's Four is now launched. The thing of interest to some of you might be that this was shot in multiple, non similar cameras, including a Canon XF305, Panny GH2, and a Canon 7D. Why? Cause that's what we had in town to use. (G). The challenge for me technically was to match the colors and contrasts on these very different cameras.

Edited in Vegas 11 using multi camera. Sound engineering professionally done on a Tascam HD-P2.

This is the first video in an ongoing series that will be airing on the web. The client and I have been working through a series of shoots over the last year, starting with a simple concept and wanting to bring it to a professional level, as Mark said, "making champagne on a beer budget." I think we have achieved that pretty well. Mark has been a folk singer professionally since the early 60s, and has an ample set of songs that were from his solo career. The goal of this project was to do a weekly audio podcast/video production/written work, to help promote his tours, CDs and other projects. Mark wanted to give this a personal feel, rather than cutaways that would evoke your standard commercial fare.

Nothing earth shattering here, I just tried as well I could to execute a solid multi cam shoot on a shoestring. We rented the Key City Theater in Port Townsend to shoot, and give a live performance feel. Managed to hire local shooters who could handle the DLSRs, put one camera on a Kessler slider and also hired a professional sound guy to man the audio, which I highly recommend.

If you are asked to shoot a multi camera job, my recommendations are to control the lighting as best you can (or purposely do the opposite for effect), test your cameras to find the best setting in advance, and work with people you can trust and direct on the B camera shots.

Folk music might not be your thing, but Mark has been doing it his whole adult professional career, has written some really excellent songs, and has performed all over the world with the Brother's Four. We tried our best to do justice to this creative and kind client. He has respected the teams' expertise, been willing to learn from us on how to improve his video persona, and been willing to experiment. You can't ask for a better client. If only all the others could be like that!

Thanks. Having the stage lighting helped.

Yes, if I could afford both an XF305 and XF100 I would own both for this kind of shoot. Use the Canon 7D as a DOF B camera. The GH2 is a great camera, nothing against it. I would stay with the 7D only because I already own a bunch of lenses for it. Starting all over again, might look at the GH2 seriously for DSLR work.

Random: as a kid growing up in lima, ohio, brothers four was a grocery store. That's back when farm fresh didn't need to be called farm fresh. That was brothers four only option. Behind it was the barn out back. Restaurant and cateing. As a kid i was shorter, so it seemed big, but lightening burned down the restaurant and the store just went away. Ok. Bye.
