Canon XC15

canonrumors.com has posted images of what it claims is the new XC15. They claim the XC will be released alongside the C700.

Canon has released two version of a camera a couple of times. Like the Vixia HF G10 and then the companion XA10, where the XA10 is the same as the consumer G10, but with a handle and XLR inputs.

At first look, it seems the XC-15 is the XC-10 with an XLR port (images on Canonrumors.com). Most things seem to be identical.

I would have much preferred a quick re-make from Canon based on feedback from XC-10 users, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm just hoping that this drives the price of the original XC10 down to $1500, which would bring its value on the used market closer to $1200. At that point, it would be a no-brainer to pick up one or two as B and C-cams for our existing C-series cameras.

I used an XC10 for the first time today as a B cam to the C100ii...

Was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it was a little awkward and could use more assignable buttons but I kinda liked it.
What I was most impressed with was the lack of noise at high ISO's.

I accidentally shot one alt angle of an interview at 12500 ISO (long story lol) and was really surprised at how "useable" the image was.
Granted I got lucky as there was virtually no blacks in the scene or on the subject, but really shocked by the result.

I will definitely have my eye on the XC15. The matching color profiles and use on gimbals is reason enough for me to consider for our small/medium, web based corporate work.

We shall see...

To be cliché - Yawn. So much opportunity with this camera and they just don't want to pursue it. No changes to the lens? It is slow. No dedicated viewfinder? The loupe thing is just ok, not great. Canon your are close on this one but you need a constant f2.8 lens (like the Sony RX10 already has) and a dedicated viewfinder design. Drop the loupe approach. Commit to this being a video camera and not some still thing. In this price range we need small, capable and flexible (shooting in many different handheld positions).

Free feedback concluded.

I think this is just their second attempt at trying to revive the product. Create some buzz again.

Adding an XLR input and a waveform monitor makes for a nice "+5" update. A suggested price of $3000 seems kooky. Luckily used XC10s regularly appear on B&H for ~$1650. (How I got mine.) But when I think about it, the price makes sense. The Sony RX10 has a better lens, but a non-broadcast codec. The Canon XC10/XC15 is broadcast ready. In short, Canon is going after customers with deeper pockets.

Their lens also makes sense. My primary camera is a C100 mark ii, and I love the continuous face detect autofocus. But this feature only works with 5 STM lenses, none of which have a constant F2.8. Since the XC10/XC15 also have continuous face tracking AF, I would have been surprised if it had a better lens than anything available for the C100ii.

B and H is listing it for $2,399.- Not in stock yet. My only serious gripe with my XC10 is the low-light performance. They say it's been improved. Looking forward to some footage.

Oh, good. The first report I read had the price at $3000. $2400 is much more reasonable, and the math checks out:

XC15 ($2400) = XC10 ($2000) + XLR Unit ($500) + Waveform monitor ($XX) - 64 Gb CFast 2.0 card ($200).

I upgraded the firmware on my XC10 and it is now noticeably better at high ISOs for HD. But yeah, it's not the greatest in low light. Still a small and handy B cam! :)

I checked the cold shoe extender out. Its cool, but on the back of the XLR adapter there is a place to attached the clip for the cable. That is where I want to attached my wireless receiver. I would like to find a double sided cold shoe.

I was searching through my Blackmagic Ursa Mini bag and found this. I used this to mount my20170213_162856_HDR.jpg20170213_162309_HDR.jpg20170213_162420_HDR.jpg20170213_162430_HDR.jpg wireless receiver to the Canon XC 15
