Canon Vixia - Sound Equipment

I am an amateur filmmaker. I've done 2 short silent films but now I would like to start recording dialog. I am looking for a microphone (boom or something else) for my Canon Vixia HF S200 (small camcorder). I would like to get some advice regarding what to buy, preferably, to plug it into the camera. My intention is to submit my next films to festivals. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi Aggie,Search the board and the web (Google) re: "film sound" and "production sound."Then maybe ask some questions in the Audio forum. The thing is, you can spend $30, or $300, or $3,000 (or $30,000 , I suppose); it all depends on what you want to do and what your subjective idea of "quality" is.GJ

as Gregg said your budget or how much you are looking to spend to upgrade your sound will help to make better recommendations for you.

If you are looking to improve your sound recording without spending too much i would recommend a combination of a RODE NTG-2 or similar shotgun microphone paired with a JuicedLink preamp (CX211 or CX231) and recording directly into the camera. I've used this combination in the past for short films and different types of shoots (also paired with a Vixia HF S21) and have gotten great results for the price.

A RODE NTG-2 with a shock mount, boompole and windscreen plus a JuicedLink CX211 and some XLR cables will run you about $600-700 and it's a pretty good base to start with imo, from there you can continue adding to your sound equipment depending on specific needs (lavaliers, wireless, external recorders, wind screens, etc.).

Aggie - you can get an extension cable for the Rode Video Mic Pro - and you can stick it on a boom pole too - that's a great starter mic with a 3.5mm (5/8" TRS). You get a decent short shotgun, a shockmount and a windscreen for a small amount of green. It will plug right on in without expensive adapters. Make sure you use headphones (and you can get an extension for that too) and put 'em on the person who's booming the mic. A decent wireless lapel mic (such as the Sennheiser G3) will make life easier for you too. I used a Vixia and a G2 lapel mic for dozens of interviews. No worries.
