Went on a small photoshoot with a local singer/songwriter last week and here are a few that I snapped. We spent about two hours in downtown Ft. Worth; shot on the 7d with [day shots] the kit lens, and [night shots] with a nikon 50mm f1.2 and adapter. Let me know what you think, and any constructive criticism is very welcome as I'm thinking about taking my photography to a semi-professional level.

nice Ryan! i think what i like most about those shots is that they don't look digital...nice softness, and the time of day/colors are very appealing. i'm not a pro, but these were my first impressions. keep it up!

These are interesting shots. As far as constructive criticism goes, Ryan, I would have to say that attention needs to be paid to your subject's face. We're seeing some shadows that are not contributing to the image. Part of it is due to the hat, of course, and tricky lighting situations.

The second image works with the shadows. It helps convey the emotion in the shot. But the first shot and the last two suffer from them. Just enough fill flash from your on-board flash can do the trick, as can a reflector.

Also, I think I would have used a CPL with the shots of him in front of the building, with the understanding that skin tone may need to be adjusted in post.

2 and 3 are my favs. I like 5 allot but I don't relly pay attention to the singer which is kind of bad.

Great shots.

Also to tag on to mikes question,

what lens? im trying to do something in extreme lowlight and im looking for the best way to get an effect similar to this....

Thanks Mike, the light is steam coming from the lava falling into the sea from a cliff. I stayed on the big island the whole trip, but made it all the way around it.

This was taken with the canon 24mm f/1.4 @ f/2 and a 30 second exposure, 320iso. It wasn't really an ideal situation as i had to set the camera on some rocks as I didn't have a tripod with me. The lens work well though, the image at full rez looks good.

Shot a training video for a makeup company that specializes in products for HDTV.

5dmkii and Canon 7d. Had to go out and get the Canon 100mm L macro to get close enough on the B-camera. Thank god for Penn Camera and American Express!

Here is a still from the end of the shoot. Shot with the 5dmkii and the 24-105 F4.0 L IS USM.

Was working on expanding my light expressions series a couple of weeks ago... These are minimally processed, just some Lightroom tonal/color tweaking, NO photoshop of any kind.
