Canon T2i Anamorphic effect?

I am wondering how I can go about getting an anamorphic look with my canon T2i. I would rather not buy a lens so is it possible that I just shoot further away than usual and then crop the footage in post?

If the only think you need to have is a 2.39:1 aspect ratio in your footage, then you can crop in post. For this you could upload the magic lantern firmware and use the custom cropbars to frame while filming. You could even think of using a wider angle lens for cropping.

But of course, shooting anamorphic is a whole lot different thing

aspect ratio and anamorphic are 2 different things. :D

You can put black bars or crop to get the wider aspect ratio, to get anamorphic you need lenses.

There are some things you can do. There is a fake anamorphic filter out by someone which simulates the bokeh and light streaks of those lenses. If you want just the light streaks there is a setting in Magic Bullet which simulates it. There is another method of actually putting a thread of fishing line behind the lens, but can't remember where I saw that. You can create your own custom bokeh filter and make that an oval shape.

And of course, crop.

Vid-Atlantic make the Cinemorph filter that replicates the anamorphic flaring, you could also get a 4X4 streak filter but they're expensive and you need a Mattebox.

The Magic Bullet solution is awful, better off learning some motion tracking and get the Optical Flares plugin from Videocopilot.
