C100: Canon - Suggestion - Users pay to get new tecnical upgrades to Mark I models C100/300

If some of the latest rumours are true and Canon actually launch a 5D mkIV, or possibly a 5Dc with full frame sensor with similar AF tech as C300, same 15 stops and Canon Log2… that would be extremely sweet.

I definitely feel there's room for both a general mkIV with "normal" internal 4k video and a more specialised 5Dc with Log2, AF, CFast 2.0 and so on.

If the 5Dc was a full body like the 1Dc, maybe they could use more powerful processing to reach some nice frame rates at high quality—similar to C300 mkII. It could be priced around $7000 and we would essentially have a more accessible 1Dc mkII under a new name.

Nice idea Adree, if came to life the 4k gap is fill - 5DC - 4K - 7000$

1dc already takes that place. I don't think there's going to be a 5Dc, just a successor to the 5D3, with enough improvements to make it an industry workhorse for both stills+video.

I expect a modest pixel increase but a big lowlight push. I expect it to be just a bit slower than the 7D mkII, making it a camera that can basically do everything from studio, portrait, sports, journalism, weddings, lowlight, etc. I am pretty sure about this aspect. What I am not sure about is the video push.

Will they still want maintain it as a pro video camera competetive with the market or they just going for stills workhorse + good enough video?

these are the two unknown scenarios. The next 5D will show if Canon realy decided to dump the sub 5k$ video arena or not.

If they do want to compete and make it live up to the 5D name, it should have a dual pixel AF like the one in the C300 mk II (have you seen that thing!!) and it would have to signficantly up the resolution to modern levels, either by implementing 4K or a perfect 1080p mode (like C100, 1Dc s35 mode, C300, 5Draw),

that's all they need to do. Not changing the resolution (the main 5D) weakness would bd a sign of abandoning the pro video area under a certain price point.

I see no reason marketing wise why the 5D shoudln't have 1080p quality like the C100 (2999$), this won't canablilize any sales from the C100/C300 sales, this is a video/stills hybrid, completely different animal.

I think that is enough hardware in the C100/300/500 MARK I models to have upgrades in the specs.

Pedro what your opinion is based on? if its based on nothing.... its a strange statement!
many of us c300 owners would pay extra for some upgrades.... but its never going to happen, not what canon does! i would pay 1000 eur for 60p and 10bit internal or external. and maybe more for additional extras! but its even less then a dream.

the only hope, or i would say a dream that i may have is some one like magic latern. as i heard they were not going to work with expansive pro cams, but now c100 coast same as 5d , so maybe they will look that way ...

Based on the 5dc release it would seem that Canon is headed down a path of separating the DSLR stills cameras from the the video cameras going forward. So I doubt you will see higher level video functions in the still camera line. Stills shooters don't want or need it. DSLR form factor sucks for a motion camera and the smaller lighter bodies are not particularly well suited for the higher processing power and cooling requirements that high quality modern video codecs and frame rates require. You will see cameras like the XC10 optimized for high quality video with stills as secondary function alongside stills cameras optimized for their function with minimal quality video as has been the case all along. Canon's attempts at doing both in one form like the 1DC have not been particularly successful.

The way things are headed, I don't think we are too far away from the point where folks will pick camera features via subscription service. Buy the box, then engage the needed features via cloud for a monthly fee.

Since the c300 has been discontinued, is there a deadline for when I need to get a dual pixel upgrade by?

C300 is not discontinued. So you can get DPAF enabled by sending your camera to your local Canon service centre. The c300 sells at a pretty low price and will remain relevant for a long time. Not many shows are shooting in 4K. People are still demanding stock footage for broadcast which is 720p. European broadcasters are asking for 50i footage, not even progressive. There is a lot of life in the C300.

The Canon reps clearly stated that the C300 M1 are not being discontinued and still very relevant in their line. They were clear that they fully intend to support these cameras.

Its dangerous to spread facts that you have not researched or looked into.

Although they won't do any technical upgrades to the mk 1, I wish Canon would drop the price of the DPAF upgrade. $499 is pretty steep for the C100 MK I when you can get the DPAF version for $3500. I paid $4500 for mine without it (of course the difference is still the same - $500 between the two models so they're not gonna drop the price of the upgrade).

The C100 Mk II has face detection which I would absolutely pay for on the Mark I but I already talked to Canon and they said due to hardware, it's impossible to get.
