Canon/Sony Capturing Issue

All-
Last week i went out on a shoot for a week with my Sony V1U, and a friend of mine who came from Alaska to shoot with me, with his Canon XH-A1. Ideally, we would have both been using the same camera, but we were delaing with the gear he had access to, not necessarily the gear we could choose from. After the shoot, he handed me the tapes, went back to Alaska, and i came back to Atlanta to jump into edit. As you would imagine, I realized AFTER the fact, that my V1U will NOT actually playback his tapes, as it doesn't recognize the Canon 24F format. And upon some reading, it appears to me hardly ANYTHING reads that format, other than a few decks, the A1 itself, or the HV20. So here's my question:

Outside of getting one of those decks or cameras to serve as my playback/capture device, am I screwed?

Is it possible to dub the tapes, take the dubbed version, and play THAT back in my V1U?

I've got a fear I'm making this much more difficult than it has to be, but i'm also trying to find the most efficient and inexpensive way to make the 7 hours of footage something i CAN ACTUALLY edit from, rather than stuck on tape with no way to read or see them. i suppose, the worse case scenario is, I send the tapes back to my buddy in Alaska, he dumps them from the tape to DVD, and sends them back to me. But thats just added time i'd rather use to edit and get going. Thanks folks.

Oh, any Atlantans here have an HV20 they would like to rent out for a couple days?:):):)

Thats tough. IF you can find a local cam to borrow/rent....that is going to be the best way to go. IF you do have to send the tapes to your buddy.....dont go to DVD with them.....have him sve the footy to an HDD in a file that you can edit. AVI, MOV etc.....Skip the high compression that going to DVD will produce, I assume that you are going to end up with DVD anyway....why compress...and then re-compress.

My 2 cents
