Canon R5 MKII Announced

Looks like Canon knocked it out of the park with this one, 45mp stacked sensor, eye tracking AF, subject priority, 8K60P internal raw-lite, faster burst speeds than Nikon Z8/Z9.

Yes, it took forever but Canon finally decided to play ball, at the price of $4299. Basically the same price of an entry C-series camera which is fine.

It is too late for me but I wonder how the white balance procedure is with this camera. The R5 still had the stupid 'take a picture of the scene and apply it' method from the stone age. I would expect it to be corrected but will not be surprised if it did not change either.

I'm disappointed the new R5 Mark II doesn't have timecode or the cinema menu. Those two things are big features for me in the R5c, but I guess technically the R5 II isn't a "cinema" camera.

I wasn't planning to upgrade most likely anyway, and it looks lIke I probably still will not. Just not enough new features that make a difference in the work I do. But still a very nice camera offering from Canon.

I'll buy one used in a couple years. ;)

It has an ISO sensitivity option for 51200, my Z8 25600, 16+ DR is a game changer if true, the HDR mode looks nice, AI noise reduction on stills, eye tracking, custom subject priority. Pretty compelling to me, seems like a solid upgrade in most ways over my Z8. On the other hand, the Nikon punches above its pay grade for 8K60P NRaw/NLog, 4K Prores Raw, and especially the Nikon Z mount lenses are a little sharper, punch above their pay grade for size, price. Also Canon looks to have a proper flippy screen, and incredible choices for fast telephoto and high end cinema lenses.

Why isn't Nikon suing Canon for internal raw patent infringement? DLD was always right about the cartel, God Bless wherever you are.

I'm not sure about the Canon menu but the Nikon is a dumpster fire. If Bassman is correct about the "take a picture of the scene and apply it" white balance method from the stone age, I would have to skip Canon for that reason alone. That's awful, and WB on the Nikon works very well and convenient. Sony could play its hand and take all the chips.

I agree about the white balance. Canon has struck me as a company that isn’t receptive to suggestions and user input because it knows better than you do. I feel they have categorized it as photo first so there is no need to change it. Similarly when Panasonic decided that contrast detect AF was good enough.

The 16 stops of DR screams marketing hype where they boost the numbers by using noise reduction. I think most if not all current sensor fall closer to 12.

I’m sure the camera is fine but $4,300 is expensive. Throw in a couple of R mount lenses would easily be 10k+. Which might fit the market but not for me.

I actually just pulled the trigger on a FX30 for $2,700 less than the R52. Sure it’s not FF but it’s adequate for most purposes at least mine.

The introduction video does show a movie screen with 5600K on it, at least implying you should be able to dial it in. At least I think it would be egregious to have that the result of snapping a picture to apply WB.

Snapping a picture for WB is still the traditional way on those cameras (vs. pressing a button on a video/cinema camera and doing it "live" when you have white/gray filled in the frame).

But you were always (at least for the last decade) able to dial it in in increments of 100 and use the color/tint feature if you needed to with it.

The RF lenses also let you assign WB to their control rings (if available) as a way of dialing it in vs. camera dials, a fantastic feature I liked to use.

Good points, the R5c remains the more complete cinema camera. The R5 MkII is an 'adventure' camera. There..I created a new niche category :)

The Nikon Z8 has several auto WB controls, A0 is keep white (reduce warm colors), A1 is keep overall atmosphere, A2 is keep warm lighting colors, all three and the dialed-in temp control have tint control as well. I just leave mine on A1 because it seems to maintain the overall atmosphere and doesn't skew when you pan from daylight to shade areas or the like.

Full disclosure, Z8 does NOT have:

- false color metering
- user luts
- HDR modes (except HLG)
-pre burst shot buffer
- predictive sports mode AF (tracks the ball), also recognizes spiked volleyball or basketball AF
- person upper body AF
- select-the-person AF priority from list
- eye tracking AF
- 16+ stops dynamic range

So the R5 MkII is a substantial advancement over the Z8/Z9, really good sports camera.

Z8 has one confirmed advantage, it works.

Yes this has always been the work around when complained to colleague about canon wb and he said manually dialed in an arbitrary number that looked good and went with it.

There's always a counter argument no matter how bad you think the design is. For example S9 is terrible by most metrics but someone can cleverly wash it all away that it was intended for someone else or some other purpose. For example camera over heats in 5 minutes, response it's for Tiktok videos that are less than 30 seconds, its supposed to be a fun camera. Why are you getting all serious and mad? lol

Back to the R5 WB Canon will say it's primarily designed for photo.

Personally, I started using AWB more and more like 5 years ago. Never did for many years but one day I decided I had enough of changing it at events with windows and rooms and different lighting and slowly started to try it. Also knew I could most likely fix anything in post to be "good enough" for the Internet as long as the transitions weren't rapidly wild (which they weren't).

That was always for running-and-gunning, & it's always worth to lock in something for static and long.

I've used AWB too for same reason on occasion. It's always been frowned upon just like AF but like a lot of these things people need to stop kidding themselves they're filming a Hollywood masterpeice with the crew and control to maintain a result. But on some occasions if the camera gets AWB wrong and the wb is shifting all over the place that would be a nightmare to re adjust the entire video second by second in post.

So where am I. I dont know.

I shot a bit last week paddaling between the C200 and the R6.

The C200.
-its too heavy (but lighter than the c400
-I like the big rubber viewfinder
-ive assigned black and white focus check
-ive sort of learned about focus

ND nd nd nd .. IT ROCKS.

The R6
-I love the low mass and mass close to the body (when holding it like a camera!)
The eyecup hurts

-----
Lens wise...
th 28-70 or 24-105.2.8 would be stay on all day lenses

These lenses are not on the c200. S35 is annoying for fast zoom, im 18-35 1.8 and thinking to add an 85 1.8

Fullframe RF is winning for lenses. Some g for the 28-70 would be a big win.

---

The bodies.. I want some big buttons and icons..

focus check while rolling
easy crop mode
easy HFR engagement.

pre roll is a winner if you are waiting for the bunny to pop out of the hole or the presidents ear.

resoltion whatever is all BS.. it is to me all about getting shots and knowing where you are.

You tube does not tell me about this R5ii

-focus check while rolling?
-one button crop mode?
-one button pedal through hfr
-pre roll stays engagted?

Does the handgrip have an audio input? big hdmi?

small sdi?

Handgrips could rock.

My point?

Quality is find in r6 and c200.

Im imterested in making the frame i want..

Fov
Exposure
Frame rate
Dof

It should not be this hard

I'm starting to watch the review videos. I saw a little a bit of Kai. It's pretty funny they made it a little wider and there are vents but no fan. You have to attach a vertical battery grip otherwise it still will over heat in around 40 minutes. I learned the vents are not like the S5II they only funnel air across the outside of the back of the camera they don't access the inside the camera.

I was wondering how they'd dance around the over heating issue because if they added a fan then what would be the point of the RC. It's funny the dance they do to make sure one model doesn't impinge on another.

The Newsshooter article mentioned 30 minute record limit in 4K, but then also mentioned they did overheating tests which got far beyond 30 minutes. So, which is it, is there a 30 minute record limit like the original R5 or not?
