Canon R5 Announced with 8k

I did write that probably the way Magic Lantern and the R5 process RAW data from the sensor is completely different - is this the case? From the teardown, it looks like no attempt is made at taking away heat from the processor and sensor - is there something I'm missing?

Of course, I'm not an engineer, I shoot films for a living. My point is your two posts here are full of wild inaccuracies and conspiratorial claims followed plain old bias.

Mega disaster. They over-crippled both cameras. Assuming the temp readings are correct, both shut down on "idle".

Mind you, Sony crippled A7SIII too by eschewing a sensor with a superior resolution that has been sold for several years already in a number of less expensive cameras, including their own. But, at least, they were upfront about it and the only real problem there is the price of the model. Which is $500-$1,000 too high.

Btw do people remember how Apple would push out a firmware update to iPhones just after the new model was released that would slow the phones down in order to "optimize battery performance"? I personally witnessed people saying "gee, my iPhone is feeling so slow lately....and that new one just came out. Maybe I'm due for an upgrade." (This is what comes of having too much money and not enough technical savvy.) But I think after an uproar from the younger crowd, apple may have discontinued the practice or enabled control of the power settings

I'll check about the control ring but I don't think so.

And I think native lenses are the best investment for the RF mount. I may do that same test with the 24-105mm and see how it performs. The videos had water which made it difficult, but there is no point using this camera with EF lenses unless, (1) you already have a pile of them, and/or (2) you're planning on using other cameras in the future.

I think the heat is real. Many did not think they could even do 8k in a body the size of the R5. So I do not see this as a cripple as much as trying to accomplish too much. As stated earlier in the thread - We have a decently sharp, 10bit 4:2:2 4k non-HQ video image with beautiful color from Canon. That alone is a win and anti-cripple behavior. The HQ modes are icing and at least are pretty accessible. If they can get these modes to operate more predictably then that is all they would ever do. My point is, this camera is far from a disaster from a customer point of view. The still side is astounding. One good firmware update for the video and it is a landmark release.

I agree about the Sony. Even $500 less would make it a lot more appealing. One has to buy lenses and commit to the system which costs quite a bit.

Oh, honestly thought you were an engineer and was about to throw light on what's going on with the Canon fiasco.

Care to say why my posts are biased or inaccurate? This is just your opinion, and opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

I use Blackmagic cameras to earn a living, but own also Sony and Canon cameras. I may be unknowingly biased though, between the R5 and A7S3 though it's obvious only one is a video tool, the other is regrettably just a pita for owners or operators..... that's based on fact, not conjecture or blind brand fanatism

The camera shuts off at 45C. Meanwhile, off the chart I posted, 45C is an idle temp for a CPU, with the peak temps achieving 95C.

Now, that isn't to say that there is no heat built up in the camera whatsoever but that it's set to shut down regardless of the temp.

This is off topic but I am by no means an Applehead, I own only the iPhone, that's it. But it's nearly 5 years old on the original battery. I think they did a pretty nice job of managing short term life, long term life, recharging rate. I don't feel the conspiracy practice with it. I finally upgraded just yesterday because there is a problem with the screen dimming in one corner, didn't think it was worth fixing. Had already replaced screen once after a cracking it, expensive repair.

I agree.... it would be interesting to test the camera with direct cooling on the processor board and maybe sensor. It's far fetched I know, but if there is no artificial limitation then maybe the camera can be rehoused with adequate heat pipes and cooling. Maybe with a 3d printed back.

I posted these images a couple of days ago with the wrong colour space. Here they are with the right colour space so you can see how easy the R5 matches with the C500 MKII. These have had no grading, just LUT applied and 5% saturation added.

R5 was shot with the basic 'shoot all day' 4K, non HQ mode.

I'd use that all day. Much better than the EVA+GH5 combo. And probably closer than the Fs7+Fx9 or those weird people that throw a C200 up with an Alexa Mini for Multicam.

You could have told me you had two of the same camera on that shoot, judging from those screen grabs

Also, that fixed the weird highlights in the background, and looks fantastic.

The R5 won't match the C500 for detail, but who wants detail when you're shooting a face?
