Canon IS glas - how good is the OIS?

I am run'n'gun and do 95% of my shots handheld. I use a cheap Agonic Stedi-Stock for stabilization and I love it. Currently I have a GH1 but I am interested in a Canon DSLR.

Now I am looking at different lenses and wonder how good the IS is.

- Is there a way to measure IS and compare it with each other? (link?)

- Can someone compare the IS available for the Canon lenses with a good camcorder OIS stabilizer, the GH1 Kit lens or anything else you have worked with?

i wouldnt shoot handheld without IS unless its a really wide lens

no objection there... I am just wondering if there is a difference in all those OIS formats (OS VR IS VC).

I mostly do static with little panning.
