Canon - implementation of wide angle

Curious about the way the XL2 handles lens width - in particular the horizontal f.o.view for 4:3.

Refer 20:1 lens and examples of the motorcyclists images in the XL2 brochure. pdf ( if you do not have a camera to follow this with )

4:3 - setting the lens at max wide, displays a fairly dynamic less (boring) view of the image.

16: 9 - discovers the horizontal width and the dynamics of a wide angle lens.

Seems to me the lens can cover the f.o.v optically and the CCDs can cover the recording.

So why does the implementation of the 4:3 lose so much width - waste the image available to it. ???

Re: Canon - implementation of wide angle

As near as I can tell, Canon intentionally hampered the 4:3 in order to make the 16:9 look more appealing.

With Canon's implementation, they can show the camera in 4:3, and then switch to 16:9 and say "see how much wider it gets?" Which makes people think they're getting more.

In fact, they're getting less with the 4:3, not more with the 16:9. In 4:3, it uses neither the full width nor the full height of the chip. In 16:9 it uses the full width but not the full height. There's 25% of the CCD that never gets used in any circumstances (the top and bottom parts that are outside the 16:9 patch).

Re: Canon - implementation of wide angle

Thanx Barry - that was straightforward. Glad some one saw it as I did . Worried I would get a long technical explanation from somewhere.

I agree that 4:3 is less in this case and possibly inferior in quality

Pity really but I guess it sells wide angle lenses.
