Hello Guys:

I am a newbie and I just brought a Canon HV40 to get started. Besides the extra battery and external mic, any other advice to get me started?

Any guidance will be appreciated.

Im sure there's everything you need to know if you use the search key. You will be able to find info faster then we can post it. give it a try. and welcome to the forum.

All you need is at HV20.com
Ahhh...exactly!
To resume:
1) Tripod should be on the top of your list: i'd recommend to check for a weifeng 717 > comparable to some high end manfrotto/bogen for half of the price
2) A wideangle lens could be usefull: Raynox HD6600 is usually the most recommended lens
3) A good audio setup: micro + recorder > Recorder ZoomH1/H2 or H4 depending on your budget/needs. Microphone : a good shotgun if you plan to make short movies. I own 3 different type of mic > shotgun, hyper and cardioid (depending on the location)

Junior member more helpful...while more senior members are helpful with sarcasm... why waste the time typing saying..."use the search etc..?" I think if you don't have something useful don't say nothing at all!

There is quite a bit of information here as well as on HV20.com -- look in the HV20 section of this forum.

Because there are so many facets to learning video and filmmaking you are better off asking specific questions rather than ones that are too broad. For the most part you will just need to do a lot of reading on these boards to learn as much as you can -- that's the benefit of a messageboard. Most likely what you are asking has been asked and answered already, so just take a look around and read a lot.

If you have a very specific question that you can't find an answer to, there are lots of people who are willing to give you their opinion!

My tip of the day for you: Get a high capacity battery on Amazon. The stock batteries just don't last very long. I'd recommend this one:

Never forget sound is 70% of what you see on the screen, so pay attention to all aspects of it .. and practise practise practise.

To help learn what sound is about you could watch a favorite movie with the pix off .. and to help learn about vision you could turn the sound off.

Cheers.

1) I second that, being more active there than here (nothing personal with this forum).
2) You can also check here, recommended seller.

Consider going the route of the juiced link CX231 for its phantom powered capabilities. If you're ready for separate audio recording however, then that's a different story.
