Canon HV30 vs. Canon HV20

What's their main differences? I have no experience with them. My friend Judy want to get one of them, is the Canon HV30 more advance than the Canon HV20. We can't find many reivews for it on line, want to get some opinions here. And the lowest price we found for it is $825 .

These two weren't designed to compete with each other--Canon likes to change their consumer models every year, so the HV30 is 2008's HV20. As was said elsewhere, for someone who already has a 20, there's no compelling reason to upgrade--but pretty soon, the existing stock of 20's will have sold out, and the 30 will be all that new customers can buy.

I find that hard to believe.

Head to camcorderinfo for a detailed review. The differences are the 30 has 30p, a slightly better lcd, an easier to use zoom toggle and is black. That's it really.

If you need the money, go for the HV20. You can get a new one for about $730 right now. I bought an HV30 because I wanted the better zoom toggle and 30p. And the HV30 looks nicer.

30p, glossy LCD, bigger thing to put your finger on the zoom toggle and black, textured body.

Oh! And a higher price.

Jus' curious, is 30P so great? Isn't it difficult to change to 24fps or 25fps if you want to output for different markets?

HV30 users in Europe are unhappy. There is a nasty bug in DV mode, at least with the PAL-version, which leads to an unusable picture. HDV seems to be no problem so far.

30P is primarily used for sports footage that is converted to 60i for DVD. It provides better clarity and is better for slow-motion work. 30P isn't designed to be converted to 24P.

30p is being used for many more things. For that more sophisticated and modern look. For broadcast in 1080p and not 1080i and with no pulldown. It doesn't look nearly as choppy as 24fps and doesn't look as much like 80s-90s tv shows as 60i. That's just my guess at why 30p is becoming more popular. Nothing will get rid of 24fps and 60i completley. Just watch the recent episodes of top shows on the Discovery Channel.
