Canon FD's

sofar, my footage looks awful....

i have a 50mm 1.4 SSC and a 24mm 2.8 SSC that i just got off ebay. both lenses are mint.

i must admit, i was testing the lenses in a poorly lit home, both during the day, and at night wide open...compensating exposure with the camera, and not the lens...various ISO's. The black looks purple, and blockiness prevails...my footage looks pixellated, even though my camera says the the image is properly exposed....looks like junk sofar...i feel like a noob again, coming from an XH-A1.

I doubt that the Canon Fd's would be the problem, I use them all the time with great results. Were you in full creative movie mode with manual exposure selected in the menus?

Just a quick question. I recently obtained canon fd 50mm myself but haven't been able to test it since i couldn't get my adapter yet. On the back of the lens there are two protruding rods, one big one and a small one just like in this picture.

The big rod on top moves fine but the one on the bottom doesn't seem to move. Is that normal?
Also another quick question. When I'm switching apertures there's an selection "A". What is the purpose of that A.

I believe so.

"A" is for auto-iris on old Canon SLRs. Yes, they did auto-exposure back then.

Hmm noticed another thing about my camera. Whenever I shake my camera I hear something moving inside. Maybe sand or gravel. Would that affect my camera and does anyone else have the same problem?

never had that issue, but when i shake the kit lens (when it's not on the camera, i hear a rattle. maybe it's the stabilization element?...not sure.

OH WHOOPS! My bad I didn't mean my camera. I meant the FD's. Seems like there might be some sand in it or something.

oh...well, it may be loose shutter blades?...my fd 24mm 2.8 has a slight rattle, and i notice no difference in aperture when switching from f11 to f16. not sure if the 2 are related in my case.

Chris let us know if you figure things out. I was testing some AVis from my gh1 today and it's the most impressive dslr footage I have seen. Can't wait to get Nesoscene and play with the full avchd files.

The hardest thing about the FDs to me is the shallow DOF. It's both a blessing and a curse. In low light if you have to go wide open the DOF is really shallow making focus critical. I love it and hate it at the same time. I think they work best a few stops off wide open where you can have a little more in focus. Both my 50mm 1.8 and my 28mm 2.8 are really soft as well I am going to get a 50mm 1.4, everyone says they are much better. All n all another tool in the bag.

well, as we speak...i can't drag my neoscene avi's into my timeline...not sure why. i posted a thread in the Vegas forum, but no answers sofar....never had a problem before.

i'm getting better footage now though, and i'd love to edit it :-(

Hmm, if I remember correctly (might not since I haven't edited in a while cause of broken laptop) if you shot in 720p you wouldn't have to convert it to avi. I think I edited with just the mts files after importing the footage with photofunstudio. I wouldn't know for 1080 though. I used voltaic.

im shooting 1080 24p in 60i. i use Neoscene to remove pulldown...no pulldown issues for 720 60p...besides, Neoscene isn't the problem...i can watch the avi's all day...but when i import the files into vegas, it wont let me drag the clips to the timeline to begin editing....never had that problem before.
