Canon EOS RP SPecs are out - possibly?

Let’s keep in mind, once again, that these are entry/mid-level STILL cameras and any video-centric features, no matter how trivial to implement in users minds they are, are just icing on the cake. Bonuses, if you will...

NO. Not a valid excuse anymore. No. No. No.

Everyone else clearly gets it.

Nice graphic! I love it.

The a7II was released in 2014 (a lifetime ago) for $1700 and packed twice as many features in it. It's $998 today with free accessories.

$1300 at launch...well, yeah - it's 2019!!!

Anyone can twist it anyway they want to, but the bottom-line is that it only appears okay to some because it's not $2300 like it would have been last year!

I think people here are misunderstanding where this camera fits in the market:

"At $1300 body-only it is, by some $400, the cheapest ever full-frame camera at launch."

https://www.dpreview.com/articles/2123961252/canon-eos-rp-shooting-experience

As a still camera, you're correct and I agree, it's a nice camera and a bargain.
Most of us here through mainly care about shooting video where it isn't a FF camera
and there are superior products with better specs and features near it's price range.
For a video production mirrorless, it's a fairly hobbled camera although it does have some nice features.
I don't really have a problem with this camera and Canon will sell a ton of them. The only thing I find wearisome
is the whole product lineup with overly articulated feature hobbling so Canon can have a line up of 5-10 mirrorless cameras.

I'd have a lot more respect if they did what some of their competitors have done in various iterations and said, "You're a video shooter, this model is for you.
It's much more expensive than the non-video centric models but it has everything you want and need (4K 60p, 10-bit, 4:2:2, 240fps FHD, C-Log, C-Log 2/3, Cinema RAW Light or Prores RAW, no 29:59 limit, mini XLR instead of 3.5mm for audio, SDI instead of horrific HDMI, outboard XLR w phantom accessory at an additional cost."

Keep the body small and light for gimbal/drone users and people who travel to shoot, EOS RF lenses are good to go, charge, say $5k for it. Then people who want a real video camera can still pay $7,500.00 for a C200 and the rest of us quit whiniging about how the EOS R lineup sucks for video, Canon makes a tidy profit per unit and buries the A7, GH5, X-T3.
Those who can't afford, oh well, you can't afford a RED, Venice or Alexa either but working pros would GLADLY spend $5k for the camera I described. I didn't want to jump ship on Canon for the X-T3, I really have enjoyed my Canon cameras. But I, and many of you, have a dysfunctional relationship with Canon and I am done playing their artificial, insulting product segmenting game.
That's the beauty of it, vote with your dollars. I still think Canon makes great gear and will gladly keep shooting with my C200. But for mirrorless, there are better choices out there that do more of what we want/need.

The EOS-R has all of that other than the fact that the 1080/60p looks like the 60p from the 5D IV and 1DX.

i do not think that dpaf works in 4k on the eos r.

(edited: i guess i am wrong! it won't be the last time.)

I'm waiting for the XC15 replacement with the RF mount that has been rumored for awhile. It won't have high frame rate because that is not Canon's thing, but that would be a nice small camera. I have an R and I use it on a gimbal and to take photos and as a backup c cam for my C300 II's. It is the best camera that Canon makes for that purpose and I'm happy that I can give clients footage that looks exactly like the C300 as long as we are using c log. I have no interest in replacing my video cameras with a DSLR, so Canon's strategy doesn't bother me.

Oh look! It’s time for Canon to roll out their old chips again! The EOS RP has an identical sensor to the 6D Mark II, with a micro-lens array design more suited to mirrorless lenses. Canon openly admit in interviews that the RP cannot even do cropped 4K/30p without overheating. Even the modest bump in frame rate would have necessitated “a larger body design”, they say. Not sure I believe them, but clearly the technology is behind the curve.

Most disappointingly of all, it turns out that the EOS RP lacks Dual Pixel AF in 4K video mode, like the M50, which means it’s a “no-buy” from me and better to stick with the EOS R until the pro body is released, which perhaps, is the intention.

The Cripple Hammer has fallen and the carnage has arrived.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXrMvhpxWZY

No 24p is this true!? lol

Only way to stop the madness is to vote with our wallets.

Switching brands- nope, they're all in it together! We can build a better camera.

Maybe a kickstarter is in order. FF sensor from Sony*, IBIS from Olympus, color science (we'll create one ourselves: AI Color: train with NVidia GPUs), computer & storage: iPhone X level, case: carbon fiber. Entire system open source design. Completely modular with all the best parts, just like when building a high-end PC. Just say no to Cripple Cams! :)

This is not the same idea as the (discontinued) DXO One. It's possible to use a flexible cable to the sensor module, as with the Sony VENICE, that connects to late model iPhones. The big difference is the sensor and lens mount send Bayer data over the wire for processing on the phone (GPU+AI+CPU chips). The protocol allows for competition, and any sensor size can be used, from m43 to S35 to FF to MF. Software also allows for competition as well as the possibility of developers to write their own camera apps. Use any lenses, edit on the phone and upload. Use any form factor desired to mount the phone + sensor block. Slomo can be implemented with local storage on the sensor block (if Lighting + iPhone not fast enough), where after the take the compressed Bayer or even H.265 is sent to the phone (processor).

* the question is, what are the odds these suppliers will sell us components to be used to build superior products to their crippleware? Maybe we should start by being nice and not calling their products crippleware ;)

This is what the specs say:

4K (16:9) 3840 x 2160 (25, 23,98 fps)
Full HD (16:9) 1920 x 1080 (59,94, 50, 29,97, 25 fps)
Full HD HDR (16:9) 1920 x 1080 (29,97, 25 fps)
HD (16:9) 1280 x 720 (59,94, 29,97, 50, 25 fps)
HD HDR (16:9) 1280 x 720 (29,97, 25 fps)

So it seems you get 24fps if you shoot 4k, but not in HD. Weird.

Haha if true that's nuts!

As for building a 'perfect' modular camera, did some basic math and USB3 is fast enough for 6K 24p 10-bit Bayer, so latest iPhones/Android should be able to handle True 4K (6K => 4K) with an external camera sensor. Found many industrial USB3 cameras but nothing FF so far (or even S35). Did find a 10K MF sensor, but not as USB3. If a FF Sony sensor can be sourced and used via USB3, with sufficient self power (small LiIon battery), could also do basic raw compression (including wavelet to get really small) to provide extra headroom in case of any device limits below USB3 speed, as well as more options for slomo. This could be a new standard for filmmaking: modular cameras using phones for processing, GUI, and storage. Another class could keep storage and processing on the sensor block and phone for GUI. Possible to edit on phone (even if storing content on sensor block) and upload via WiFi/Cellular, as well as ultra-high quality live-streaming. Since connection is USB3, can have a fairly long cable between sensor block and phone/GUI, for novel filming capabilities.

So it seems you get 24fps if you shoot 4k, but not in HD. Weird.

I didn't think Canon could go lower on it's camera offerings for video. Boy was I wrong. This camera is garbage. What's the point?

Canon needs to release fewer and BETTER cameras.

Well, it's official...this is why we can't have nice things.

No matter what this company does they continuously, year-after-year sell tons of their cameras. This one's a 'Top Seller' within 48 hours, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a '#1 Seller' by next week.

If you are Canon, why would you ever do anything else but exactly what you're doing now?

The a6400, X-T30 (preorders just went up this morning so it's 24 hours behind the RP), E-M1X and I'm sure a few other new cameras still haven't made the list, at least this list (if it's true). Checking back on the X-T30 tomorrow.

Well, this is why we can't have nice things from Canon. And by "we", I mean DSLR video shooters. And by "nice", I mean cheap video cameras shaped like DSLR's.

As a videographer who actually shoots with Canon, I couldn't care less about this camera. I'm not sure why anybody else on this forum is giving it much thought either.

Admittedly, the lack of 23.98p on 1080p footage is interesting in understanding the psychology of Canon. Canon just seems to figure that anybody shooting in 60hz land is going to be happy at the standard 60hz frame rate. Less choices make less confusion. The 23.98p in 4K seems to be a compromise for people wanting to make "cinematic" footage and the fact that Canon has troubles handling even 30 fps at 4K.

And by "we", I mean mirrorless video shooters. And by "nice", I mean reasonably priced video cameras with reasonable features.

And the M50 shoots 1080/23.98p for less money.

And when they say they have "troubles" handling 30fps at 4K, they know many people like you will believe them...in my opinion, per usual.

Just get the A7 III. Wait- you had one. How about the X-T3? Ah, right- issues. Guess you're back to the EOS R, or did you get the Z6*?

* or maybe get a lens adapter for your phone and shoot like Soderbergh? ;) https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/shooting-iphone-feature-soderbergh-way/ (+ one-handed gimbal won't wear out your arm!)

He makes some good points...

I had the X-T3 too! Very early...I just returned it. (Just had things about it I immediately didn't like, but the future AF update did have me considering it again.)

No Nikon yet.

I'm going to do everything in my power to not give Canon any of my money. This was really the last straw for me.

I can't believe how often this needs to be repeated around here, and how often so many seem to forget: this is a STILLS camera, and Canon already has a full (and always growing) video camera lineup.

This isn't the camera you are looking for, but it is the camera plenty of STILLS shooters are looking for - it's no mystery why it will sell. I just don't understand how this can be ignored over and over in this forum.

BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IS PROVIDING GREAT VIDEO FEATURES IN THEIR STILLS CAMERAS.

If that wasn't the case like it was 5+ years ago then there would be no precedent and no complaints.

The X-T3, a7III, GH5, GH5s, S1, S1R, E-M1X, Z6, Z7 are all cameras released by the photo division.

HELLO?!

Even the EOS R has pretty nice specs.

This is all about money and nothing else.

And, yes; there is absolutely no mystery. Every single camera they make sells. No matter which one it is.
