Canon EOS RP SPecs are out - possibly?

I'm the person who insists that the cropped 1080p on the EOS-R is of good quality. It appears based on my reading of the specs that the RP is missing this ability. The RP only has a crop mode in 4K or in 720p (HD), which means that it is probably cropping the Full HD read out for the 720p crop rather than processing the 4K data. It also doesn't have C-Log or the 10-bit output. The crop on the RP is less than on the EOS-R, but otherwise it doesn't look like it is offering much to consider.

Supposedly the EOS R has high-quality cropped HD, but they disabled the better quality in 60p, so not sure it would matter much if it was the same in this one. No high-quality 60p stinks. That's what's really necessary since there is no 4K/60p...and of course Canon may also have disabled it here if it's like the EOS R...even with the different sensor crop. I doubt FF will be high-quality.

See post #1: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?362324-Canon-EOS-R

The 80D 1080p is barely usable (for YouTube) and appears better than 1DX II FF 1080p in detail. 1DX II 4K appears to have more detail than the C300 II 4K and the online examples of the EOS R shows 4K is just OK for detail, where the A7 III (6K => 4K) and X-T3 are 'Legit 4K' vs. "Fake 4K": L4K vs. F4K:
We did a deep dive discussion into real camera detail a while back, along with supporting math and graphics: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?356356-Actual-Camera-Resolution-Before-Aliasing

Now that the 1DX II has replaced the C300 II as the A studio / green screen camera I'm super impressed with the 4K detail of the 1DX II over the C300 II. Just tested FCP X with the 1DX II green screen footage and not only does FCP X not have the PP CC 1DX II decoding bug, even at 300% the quality is spectacular. With FCP X set to "Quality" (vs. "Performance") I'm able to easily play to 4K clips with green screen key with one clip off a local USB3 drive and another over a 1Gbps network (to a Windows box) perfectly smoothly. Where on the same MacPro PP CC 2019 chokes, coughs, stutters, and when it does manage to almost play smoothly (just a single 1DX II 4K MJPEG and no chroma key), audio magically drops out (until stopping and starting again). On a recent custom built Windows 10, 10-Core + GTX 1080 PC, PP CC works OK (still has the decoding bug). Par for the course with PP CC lol- next release it could get better (previous releases played 1DX II 4K footage more smoothly): up & down, yin & yang... Even with the PP CC 1DX II decoding bug, it looks better, more detailed, and more "3D" vs. what I got with the C300 II.

The 1DX II also does barely usable 120p (for YouTube), with similar 120p quality from the A7 III. Haven't needed 4K60 lately; real 1080@60p is good enough (and would upscale & sharpen nicely) and thus the only decent contender to replace the 1DX II on the horizon is the A7 III after the firmware upgrade in April (the new AF could prove super fun/useful!).

Probably just gonna sit back and watch the camera carnage release cycle and see what shakes out. 1DX II + 80D is still a solid combo, though it would be nice to get another FF camera with clean HDMI out. If the EOS RP sells like hotcakes could be useful to buy one to put Filmic Skin on it, perhaps tune it for the newer sensor, especially if it doesn't have Canon Log. I'd be open to doing a coupon/rev share however DVXUser ad guy never got back to me re: advertising on this site (Andrew Reid banned me from EOSHD after posting example work* before I could offer a rev share: it's pretty clear how Filmic Skin compares to all emulated log profiles. Kind of odd since I helped him develop his products and the years of helpful posts).

* actually after someone made a positive comment about the high quality.

I'd try your profile...but the problem is it (and others) does not help with DR. Yours and everyone else's blows everything out.

No one can fix that part of the sensor besides Canon...but for skin, it looks amazing.

Have mercy...eye detection in video!

He mentioned the EOS R didn't even get this (at least not yet).

Before we (I) get too excited, lol, someone listen to what he says at 7-7:25 minutes...say it ain't so! :crybaby::cry::crybaby:

Sure, you've got to expose to protect the highlights, and when you do the shadows can still be usable (1DX II): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UywOZIkpT4k . Content quality notwithstanding (yeah we did a quick ADR and the whole thing is kinda silly), are the highlights blown out by your standards? In any case, I find skin tones to be more important than highlights (of course love to have all three: shadows, skin, highlights). Outdoors/natural light Sony tends to have less color issues, so SLog2 with an A7x II/III can work well for this case.

Thanks for the feedback- if you get the EOS RP (or have any other Canon camera) PM me.

Wow, I'm utterly speechless if his review is accurate.

It's so amazing how they always get you...like I'm now really rooting for them to keep this up forever because it's so darkly comical.

I'm now officially declaring that what Canon does is IMO called "camera torture".

No DPAF in 4K not only done once before with the M50, but now twice with the EOS RP!

I'm taking a train into B&H tomorrow and buying the Nikon...let me know if you make one for it! (It doesn't have internal Z-Log.)

You knew they were going to cripple it, only not exactly how. Know you've witnessed the carnage lol. I'm surprised this guy doesn't do a "Canon Executive Cripple Strategy Meeting":

Cool, does the Nikon even need a profile upgrade? Nothing out there really nudging the 80D+1DX II off the team at this point (other than maybe A7 III + new firmware in April and of course the mythical A7S III). Gonna focus on content, really having fun with new lighting set up for green screen: single umbrella diffusion in front (97CRI Aputure LS1/2) and green screen lights use a magenta filter (they have a slight green bias) which helps reduce green spill on skin (especially with Jacqui's fair skin). Also testing gelled light from behind for interesting effects and thinking about doing live streams discussing deep philosophical ideas, since that's so popular ;)

I bounced around but I randomly clicked around 7:12 when he said:

"Just don't give me 1080p line-skippy ****. I would have bought the 6D II if it wasn't SO terrible. All I want is 1080p. Everybody's crying about it not having 4K. I'm crying cuz it doesn't even have 1080p."

That's priceless, haha.

Yup, REAL Nyquist Limit 1080p is all anyone really needs right now. Most 4K isn't close to 4K (only the ~6K => downsampled => 4K cameras are legit (mostly/possibly alias free) 4K). Only way to stop the insanity is to vote with your wallet (says the guy who bought the fake 4K C300 II because he didn't research it more before buying it ;). Fell for the old "Canon color! DPAF! 4K! Well, one for two wasn't bad (though Canon DSLR color > Canon Cinema Color).

I never cared what the numbers were...the resolution naming could have been A, B, C, D, E, F, G, etc.

I just wanted nicer images that looked more like photos...and 4K provided that.

If I see major improvement in 8K cameras then they will be next for me. I just go by my own eyes, that's it.

For me, it doesn't matter what the actual real resolution is...I just want to see improvement.

This should spell the beginning of the end of DSLRs with the flipping mirror.

so very disappointed about no dpaf in 4k.

i had my wallet in hand.

crop would not have been an issue for me.

canon rp wishlist:
dpaf in 4k
1080/60p
10bit/422 external
headphone and mic inputs

and what is seemingly offered:
NO dpaf in 4k
NO 1080/60p
NO 10bit external (though I could probably live with 8bit/422 especially since no c log)
YES headphone and mic inputs.

i look forward to seeing the footage.

Let’s keep in mind, once again, that these are entry/mid-level STILL cameras and any video-centric features, no matter how trivial to implement in users minds they are, are just icing on the cake. Bonuses, if you will...

The EOS-R has all of that other than the fact that the 1080/60p looks like the 60p from the 5D IV and 1DX.
