Canon ENG B4 Lens on GH1

Yes Razz, there is some CA, but in real life use it is not really as bad as you might think. The only times it's been really noticeable for me is when you have very high contrast in the scene. Pictures with low contrast tend to minimize the aberrations. People occasionally use Nikon lenses on 3CCD cameras and the reverse is true, but it's still done and if properly handled produces good usable imagery.

Svart: What model lens did you modify? Also which Fujinons did you try that you weren't able to get to work without vignette?

Bumkicho: great job on the Independence day video. Also, just out of curiosity, which lens did you use immediately after 2:52? A C-mount maybe?

I could see a little CA in that section of the clip, but to be fair, I have seen still camera lenses on single sensor cams with quite a bit more CA than that.

Also, CA is an issue even between film lenses vs CCD/CMOS lenses (made for single sensor) because good film lenses are made to focus at different depths to hit the different color layers of the silver on the film. Yes I know it is a smaller difference than 3CCD systems, but still there is some aberration when you use a film lens on an electronic sensor camera, and vice versa.

Yes, between 2:53 - 4:05 was shot with my first cheap 25mm c mount lens.

These broadcast video lenses, even the good SD ones, are really premium quality glass. Should actually perform better than most cheap still lenses.
Unsharp mask tool in Photoshop will correct CA in many instances.

Exactly. Plus you get the benefits of silky-smooth zoom, a REAL focus ring, and the ability to hold focus throughout the zoom range.

I have seen tests where a good broadcast SD lens from the 80's outperformed some of the cheaper HD lenses that they are selling today. It even had less CA than a newer lens with CAC!

Okay, in order to avoid repeating the same answer to some of you via PM, I am just posting it here.
My adapter cost me $250 including s/h from Korea. I kinda thought it was a bit pricey, but considering that it was never made before and the manufacturer had to wrestle with it for three weeks to get it right, I was willing to pay. And the result was way more than satisfying.
What I am trying to do now is to see if there are members interested in getting the same adapter(B4 to FD) as mine from this manufacturer. If there are enough people, I will visit the manufacturer during my vacation trip to Korea and Japen and I will try talking him into giving discounted price. Plus, if you live in US, you will save quite a bit of s/h charge since I will just bring them home with me to ship to you.
However, if there are only a few members interested, it isn't just worth my time traveling to his place (about 4 hours from where I will be vacationing).

Vis a vis the 2x extender. The GH1 manual says you can do a 2x digital zoom setting in video mode. This would eliminate vignetting on 16mm and 2/3" format lenses. I have a sample still image from a G1 shot this way using a 16mm zoom I bought. Has anyone tried this? I doubt it would affect 1080p resolution much as it is still around a 2500 pixel wide image.

Yep and it's a crop from the sensor so it's not really full resolution.

1080p is nowhere near the full sensor resolution anyway. Is the 2x crop also cropping the video image to 1/2 resolution?

Yes it is 2X on the 1080p, not 2X from the whole frame and then to 1080p. So it's really kindof sick looking. The 2X OPT EXT function does a 2X crop on the whole frame, but it only works in stills mode :-(

Bumkicho, I'll take one.

Barry, I will be talking to the manufacturer on Monday and will let you know the price. But there isn't anyone else committing to purchase one yet and if that is the case by Monday, you may have to pay the full price like I did. Anyway, I will PM you on Monday and you let me know if you still want to purchase it.

Too bad. Seemed like a nice possibility for 16mm lenses.
