Canon EF-S 10-22mm

Ok, so I tried the Tokina 11-16 and while it's great for stills, I was very disappointed by crazy amount of Moray pattern it exhibited. Apparently, I've heard from other members having similar experiences.

One member mentioned that the Canon EF-S 10-22mm showed much less Moray than the Tokina, which is great.

What are your guy's experiences with this lens? In particular, regarding the Moray? How would you compare the Tokina 11-16 to the Canon 10-22 for video?

Thanks

I'd try to dial down sharpness in cam and use other techniques described on this board before buying a new lens just because of moiré.

gene can sing,

The Canon 10-22 is a superb lens (there's a review of it for video use on my website if you're interested) - in the More Information section....

....but, as indicated, you really need to understand why you are experiencing this and the need to be selective about subjects which are likely to be problematic with a DSLR and a potentially very deep depth of field lens like an ultra wide angle. Dialing in as large an aperture as possible (to minimise depth of field) and partly filling the frame with organic/non-moire inducing subjects such as faces against a blurred background bokeh is the way to go. 720p, as you've discovered, is potentially (even more) horrible with Canon DSLRs than 1080p for inducing moire unless you're thinking about the things in shot that may cause problems whilst shooting - or preferably before you start shooting.

Sure the Tokina 11-16 you have is a superb lens. Learn how to use it, explore it's sweet spot and enjoy it - ditching it and replacing it with the equally excellent (in certain other aspects that are nothing to do with moire) Canon 10-22 will NOT solve your problems - certainly not as easily as you might think.

Understanding the limitations of the technology you're using and using it to it's strengths will make you a great videographer - hopefully!

My experience with it was in a Racing event over here. I shot a good variety of wide shots with the Canon and got very, very good results. Also, it doesn't have as big distortion at the widest as the Tokina. I'll post the video on vimeo for you to check out.

just for future reference ;]
I've heard similar things, but I wouldn't spend 800 on an EF lens. Save up $200-$300 more and grab yourself a used L lens, you'll thank yourself through and through.
