This lens looks amazing. After seeing the pancake from Panasonic I was really hyped for canon to come out with one as well. I wish the focal length was a little wider, but 40mm is just fine compared to my 50 1.8, What do you guys think?

Looks like a truly beautiful little lens for video!

We were able to use a pre-production sample of the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens on an early sample Canon EOS 650D/Rebel T4i, and we found that the subject drifts smoothly into focus in ‘normal daylight’ conditions. The speed of focus seems ideal for many video situations.

Canon UK didn’t have a sample of the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens to show us, but this lens offers a versatile focal length range that is likely to suit many amateur DSLR videographers.

Helpfully, it also has Canon’s Dynamic Image Stabilizer, which is useful in video mode for smoothing out camera wobbles that occur as you walk.

The 18-135 isn't the kind of lens I would usually use - I have 7 "L" lenses, plus a few non-L prime. But these things look great for video.

If there is a chance that I can get by without a Canon XH-1A or similar with that 18-135 this will be great! That plus a couple more "pancake" type 26mm, 65mm, 100 mm primes would be perfect.

The 40mm is a full frame lens, while the 18-135 is a crop lens. Irt will be interseting to see which features are included on the next 7D &/or 3D this fall, and what other lenses might be on the way?

I really have to rationalize my lens kit after this. With the 40mm and 18-135, I will have 13 lenses - some gotta go!

The MTF's for the 40mm look pretty good compared to the non-L Canon 50's.

Especially on a crop camera, it should be a pretty decent quality lens. And at a great price point in the US, $200.

This is a specialized video lens. Gizmodo also talks about the 4Ti as a precursor/template for a Canon mirrorless. We may see some good things coming out this year.
