Canon DSLR Wedding Film

Hey Kcarnes. Great overall video. You had some shots as well as a creative tone. I shoot wedding films full time and mostly with DSLR's. One thing I noticed is that your outdoor shots were at some points a little over exposed. A ND filter will cut down on the light and also allow you to bring out the color in the sky/clouds. Also, If you have not already, invest in proper sound capturing devices to aid your visuals. It is often overlooked and can greatly improve your overall production. Keep it up and looking forward to more post.
 
I have great sympathy for you. The location is horrid, just awful!! I think for what you had to work with you pulled off a good little vid, even with the over exposure issue. This is a prime example of why I'm glad I don't do wedding vids. I don't think I could have made the location look anywhere near as good as you did. good job:)
 
hey thanks so much Rayden it means a lot coming from someone with a lot of experience i will check out your stuff! since this shoot i have bought some cheap filters to mess around with hopefully they will give me better results in situations like this.

with my sound capturing i do have a zoomh4n but i always have trouble using it at weddings. do you have any suggestions? i try planting it somewhere near the couple but i always get extra sounds. are lavalier microphones the only real solution to capturing wedding vows?

awh thanks for watching in maranfilms! another little thing about the location was a bar was located across the highway and just before the kiss a bunch of bikers fired up their harleys and drove off!!! it was ridiculously loud.
 
I would have used a story-based approach. Bring us closer to the people involved in the wedding. Give meaning to why this wedding is happening in the first place.

Here is one I did recently also using a T2i + T3i. Shot as a single shooter with one monopod and one tripod. My approach going in was to try and bring out the characters and the meaning of the wedding to them.

Lav mics are one of the best ways to capture the vows for a wedding. The Zoom H4n is great for getting a feed off the board or you could send a couple of wireless mic feeds to it, but it would cost more for a couple of decent wireless systems than several H4n's. We use Yamaha C24 recorders with lav mics, one on the minister and one on the groom. You really need a recorder that is small enough to fit in a lapel pocket, which is why the H4n is not good for capturing the vows. Well in addition to the fact that the groom or minister would have to hold the H4n for the mics to pick up their voices without a lot of background noise.

The C24 cost about $150, but I see it is out of production. Some Ebay sellers still have them, but like I said, you don't have to use the C24. There are several small pocket recorders on the market. Just make sure it has a mic input and a hold button so it can't accidentally get bumped and stop recording. You can spend a lot of money on lav mics, but Giant Squid has decent mics at decent prices and there's always the Azden 503 for about $20.
 
kcarnes, the video looks very good. For the average viewer, it's probably too long. For the wedding couple, I'm sure it's perfect; and they're the ones who you have to keep happy.
I do have one question for you. I liked the speed changes in your video. It looks like you conformed a lot of footage and had some nice slow motion. I assume you shot these at 720p60. What frame rate did you set your NLE at? Couldn't tell if it was 24 or 30. Thanks!
