Canon Console sw does not recognize XH A1

I just downloaded a trial version of the Canon Console software. I have Windows Vista Home Premium

I can see the XH A1 in device manager when I connect over firewire, but when I start the console software it says "Camcorder is not connected properly or is not turned on"

Please share your experiences if you have had similar issues. Thanks in advance.
 
Have you tried connecting the camera and turning it on after the console software is already up and running?
 
Yes I did. In fact, I have another laptop with XP and tried installing the trial version there. It worked and recognized the camera correctly.

So I am thinking, it must be something to do with Vista.
