"5D users will finally be able to shoot 25P and 24P with a new firmware update coming for the 5DMkII.

“We understand that EOS 5D Mark II users desire additional frame rates and we’re preparing a firmware update to allow the camera to shoot at both 24P and 25P,” said Chris Macleod, Brand Manager – EOS, Canon Australia. “The upgrade to 24P and 25P will broaden the usage scope for this popular camera to include cinema and broadcast applications, respectively.”Canon expects the firmware update to be available in the first half of 2010 and will release more details as they become available.

Tom just said something about that over in the Red forum... Looks like I'll never hear the end of this one :)

I'm going to go pull my car in the garage from now on because it'll be lit on fire and turned into a youtube video from a neighbor with a 5d shot in 24p :)

Well, I'll be honest, even though I participated in all the petitioning I didn't think we'd see the day....
Congratulations to everybody who got active and pushed to make this happen.
:-Happy(DBG):

"First half of 2010"? What gives? Are they only now getting off of their rears about this?

You know, that's just enough time for the 7D and 1D Mark IV sales to die down, as well as to take aim at RED's new cameras right when they launch.

"First half of 2010" could be June 30th...

I was just going to post selling off the EOS 1D Mk. IV but I had to get beaten to it. Maybe their profit margin is much larger with that camera.

I'm shocked, they just took a chunk of 24p future camera business away from them selves.
No, not really.
Had they done this prior to the 7D and 1DmkIV, then yes.
But with a projected 2010 release, they're in the clear.

I am totally in shock and awe. What Canon are doing with the 5D is unprecedented in the camera industry and it's all down to overwhelming demand and seemingly the fact that the 5D will remain their full-frame flagship for quite some time yet. Clearly no replacement due until 2nd half of 2010?

This is fantastic news!! Cheers to all those who wrote and called Canon and to those pros who made it known to Canon, like Bloom and everyone. You have saved me a camera upgrade ;)

Apparently the firmware update is ready and is on hold, so they could bring it forward if they see fit. A bit of market research and even reading the forums here will give them a pretty solid sample of users' views, regarding putting off a MkIV or 7D purchase due to the update.

If everyone keeps buying the new cameras, then I'm sure they'll bring the 5D update forward.

And for anyone who doubts this is true. Official press release is now up on the Canon Europe site:

That are great, great news despite the long wait. I only hope they do not harm magic lantern which I will still need for clean audio.

This is unprecedented....just as their spring "manual control" F/W update was unprecedented for a company of this size....to offer these capabilities after the purchase.

Chip...I'm impressed. You are the man. To step forward and admit you're mistakes;) LOL....

Not sure how many more will...as I typed in another thread....if I had a buck for everyone, just in the past couple of weeks....that were absolutely adamant that there would be NO F/W UPDATE for the 5d!!!! LOL....seriously. Hopefully folks will learn that there is no guarantees from these companies...either to the good or bad. I feel like Canon is really taking a genuine interest in their camera development...by listening to the boards, the web, the phones, etc. The 'net has shrunk the world....we are ALL more educated then ever before as consumers (and pros:))....

I don't believe these updates would've taken place without the passion and participation on many of these forums....and this little video "mistake" Canon accidentally bumped into with the 5d2, FF sensor shooting 1080p!

Good Times to be in video (and still) creative

It's about bloody time.....I spent the day pondering whether I should ditch the MKII and I decided to keep it despite the 30p and then I saw this news. I'm just trying to figure out what the 2 digic IV processors do for video, not much looking at the 7D threads.
