Maybe not margins as they are dumpling stock.

The 25x10 is another loser lens that will hit discount soon :)

Actually I thought the 15.5 was a good movi - jib lens

Bah, my compact zooms just got greatly devalued. Hopefully I can still rent them for $400 each as clients become aware of the price drop of the lenses. At least I bought them used for around $10k, so no big loss there.

Maybe just a sign I need to upgrade my lenses in order to have high value lenses to rent.

If i had to guess... they are reducing margins to make way for some full frame cine zooms.
At least that would be my hope, given their current product road map:
C500mkII = FF sensor + high end FF zoom
C300mkIII = S35 sensor + compact S35 zoom

I still get the same rates today with my P2 VariCam that can be had on eBay for about 6% of it's new price and ENG lens that you can get for about 10% of new. Maybe you don't need to buy an Alexa MiLF and Signature Primes, you just need to get an ENG package off of eBay and start shooting for the nets... I can put together my camera and lens combo on eBay right now for as low as $5,250. Three days and you've completely paid for it already made a profit.

I find the nets are often lower budget. I get several network offers per year and probably end up doing around a third of the offers because the rest of the time they say my rates are beyond their budget. High end corporate and doc pays better, and many of my clients with these better paying jobs are familiar enough with equipment that they won't pay exorbitant rates for outdated or overpriced rentals.

Alexa Mini LF with signature primes would be wanting a day rate with labor at around $5k-$10k per day for a high end commercial job. Networks aren't going to pay those kind of day rates for a P2 VariCam and operator package. My rate with myself, Amira, compact zooms, tripod, and lighting is $4k. I got talked down to $3700 from NBCSports for a shoot I did last year (still waiting final payment on that, darn networks take forever to pay too), and they'd originally wanted to pay closer to $2700, but other network jobs wanted to pay closer to $2k for an Amira and operator package and I've turned those down. Another network job I did for Good Morning America last year I got around $1450 per day for a three day shoot bringing myself, two C300 packages, lighting, lenses, tripods, which I'd normally charge $3100 per day for. And again, took like six months for me to get paid. And all the crapload of paperwork which I didn't get paid to do just so I can get paid.

And another network job I did for NBC (not the sports division, so another crapload of paperwork they wanted me to fill out) last year I quoted my standard C300 starting rate of $2500 per day but they said $1500 was as high as they'd go, which is as low as I'll go (aside from occasional multi-day shoots like Good Morning America).

So yeah, I do some network stuff, but I often find their budgets lower than corporate and doc where I much more often get my asking rates.

You can probably get away with still charging the same rental rates for outdated equipment because the networks run a lot of stuff old school, aren't always looking for the latest and greatest technology and rather are often looking to continue proven workflows, the producers are often full time employees with less passion for the best quality, etc. But in the corporate and doc world, often run by freelance producers trying to give their clients the best product possible, these indviduals are often fairly up-to-date on equipment and would laugh at the idea of paying $500 rental for a 10 year old camera that sells for $1500. I know I would.

I keep hearing you complaining about network TV dying and getting lower budgets, and I imagine that'll only get worse. Another benefit of corporate and doc. Netflix and streaming is giving life and budgets to doc, and corporate will always have big budgets as long as there are big companies with lots of money that need video, companies that have so much money that hiring Ted's grandson with his DSLR isn't even a consideration, even if Ted's grandson can do 90% as good of a job.

This BIG price drops, the big price drop on their EVF as well, and pricing the C300mk3 the same as the FX9?? Wow, Canon for once is being surprisingly aggressive (by their standards!) with their pricing strategies

Perhaps they realize that they have to in this coronavirus era we live in now

Yeah, GMA = ABC and ABC is horrible(read: cheap)(I don't shoot for them). They're probably THE worst paying network. But there were guys that made millions off of them shooting news in their careers. One saving grace is ABC is an 8 hour day and it's union, so you can end up making up for some of it in penalties.

My point was, half joking, you can spend ~$5K and make ~$2K/day(solo) and be profitable in three days and they don't care if Canon just put the lenses you own on sale and try to cut your rate because of it. And no, NBC isn't gonna pay you $2500/day for a one man crew. I think I get ~$2400-$2500/day for two-man for NFL/SNF work. NBC will pay you on the spot with a CC or in a few days with PayPal. I think I've done PayPal for all of the sports shoots. There's generally little negotiating with the nets. They have rate cards and that's what it is. It can be good and it can be bad.

I've owned this set of lenses for about three years. While it's a little painful to see the price drop, it doesn't change how much I enjoy using them.
Cameras like the C300MKIII and the S35 ARRI will keep this format relevant for years to come. The fact is most production still requires S-35 sized sensors and their relative dof.

Now if they drop the price of the 30-300 I'll be very tempted.

Can these be used with a 1.4x extender and would they then work on full frame?

I checked my 18-80 t/4.4 and the extender doesn't fit, so I am guessing that at least the wide angle won't work.

Don't think I've worked for ABC before, but speak of the devil, I just got contacted by them regarding a shoot for next week for Nightline. Haven't talked budget yet, so we'll see.

Edit: Well, I quoted them $2500 on the phone, at first they were like, "...Ohhh...." in an "oh crap" sort of tone, but then followed up with, "...I think that could work." Now checking with their people, blah, blah, blah, so we'll see.
