C300: Canon Cine-Servo ENG Cinema Zoom Lens Announced! Texas Media Systems

Can i get a show of hands of all the C300 PL and C500 PL owners?

I rent the C300 when needed.

The reason I don't own, is because Canon has forced us to choose between the EF & PL mount, rather than a swappable mount solution.

Same reason I don't own the Canon cine primes. If the mounts were swappable I would have purchased a complete set.

lol so true

Fewer and fewer companies wanting to pay 'full rate' and instead going the 'good enough'
route? I mean if you've got the clients that will pay, more power too you, grab this lens and
yes, I wish I were you :) As for me, the LAST thing I am going to do, is take out a loan. If
I can't buy it with money in my businesses 'upgrade' account, then the business can't afford it.
Of course I have also, never in my life bought a new car either, the most expensive car I ever
bought was about $7500 or to put it in forum terms, about as much as a FS700 body...

I totally agree. And if you DO find a client that wants this high-end equipment, you can just rent it, no?

The everlasting rub with that one is staying competitive with the larger companies that own the high-end equipment. Or worse yet, the companies that own and rent out the high-end stuff and have an in house anointed production crew that can cherry pick your gigs. It can get really frustrating.

These lenses are amazing and clearly for specialized use. If you need this range you cant go wrong. I like to read between the lines a little. Canons commitment to the S35 sensor and these new high end EF mount zooms is telling. Don't count them out.

I read a lot on the boards how Canon is dead and Sony is taking the prize. For now it looks like that. Yes I lust for that Fs7, but when the new Canon Cinema EOS cameras come out and they will I bet they will blow our minds. I'm ready Canon. pull the trigger!

Either you are in this business for being in business or you're not. $33K for what this lens is makes for an excellent value. I don't give a crap how it compares to a car, a house, a pile of rocks, whatever. I care how it stacks up against other products in this industry. A 17-120 S-35 handholdable zoom with a servo handgrip is going to rent for $350-500 per day. That means 66-100 rental days at full rate to pay it back. That's great for a lens as a professional piece of gear. As an investment, I could buy one, drop it at a rental house and split rentals on it today. The thing will work constantly and I will make a nice income off it as I also write it off in my taxes as a five year depreciation. If I get sick of it after a couple of years I should be able to sell it for 80% of what it cost me, around $26K. Realistically after two years if I sold it, I will have made close to $30K profit off my $33K investment. That's fantastic.

Be in business to be in business. You wanna buy a car? Go ahead, but it has zero to do with the value of this particular product.

I love ya Mitch, but there isn't an available market on this planet that would support that theory. Any market that could support 100+ rentals of this particular lens is dominated by rental houses that won't sub-contract and/or split the profit so easily. There are niche markets and special circumstances of course, but they are 1) few are far between & 2) often carry too high a risk factor for small / medium sized companies.

Great lens, worth every penny if you shoot for a LIVING. Wouldn't mind having one in my bag some day :)

I'm guessing the majority of the Cine-Servo lenses sold will have the EF mount since that is the dominate mount in use in the market place.

I only know of ONE PL mount C300 in my market, but I know a lot of guys that own Canon Cine glass that are using them on NON-Canon Cameras. Canon is not dumb, they are marketing their cine glass to everyone. At NAB I saw their cine zooms on more PL mount NON-Canon cameras than I saw on C series cams. Of course, it's not a HUGE deal since the mounts are swappable on the zooms. I just wish the Duclos mod for the primes was user swappable/change-at-will, like the systems that Duclos and IBE both have for the zooms.

This lens will be a perfect match for the Arri Amira, for high-end broadcast documentaries and reality TV. A compete eng camera with a built-in cinema-quality lens that covers everything and records 4K files to small ProRes files, oh that look like alexa footage but with higher resolution.

They're just a match made in heaven. Renting both for a week is a very reasonable proposition, you don't need to pay 90 thousand dollars, nobody does that.

Canon Cine-Servo EF lens for stock is arriving on Friday.

If you need the PL mount, Canon Service will install for a fee the PL mount and return the EF parts so you can exchange the mounts on your own.

Using it tomorrow, seems my colleagues are snapping these up. I've already heard of productions flipping their Cabrios for Cine-Servos
Time will tell, I'm interested in seeing how it compares to the Cabrio.

BTW, using it on an F5. Did someone say EF is the dominant mount in the market? Not my market.

I've heard the Cabrios aren't "all that"(but the Premiere Cine's are incredible). I will be interested to hear people's impressions of the Canon in the real world.

First outing with my new EF mount 17-120mm on my well-worn C300EF: "Finding Your Roots" season 3. Will digest experiences in near future but so far so good. Hope the Cine EOS camera engineers can communicate with the cinema lens engineers so that EF cameras and lenses can communicate better too.IMG_2863lo.jpg

That EVF type and position looks very good, like a proper cinema camera. What is it and how are you attaching it there please?

After a number of less-than-ideal mounting methods I settled on the Solid Camera Universal EVF mount which I have fixed to the top 15mm rods on the Red Rock UltraCage just aft of the Canon LCD/Audio module. It's not inexpensive but it's very adjustable in all directions and, as the name would imply, rock solid. It was the first mount that gave me the flexibility to orient the viewfinder in pretty much any direction I would need.
