C300: Canon Cine-Servo ENG Cinema Zoom Lens Announced! Texas Media Systems

So beautiful. I've been shooting a lot of TV on the C300 lately and have been wanting something like this for awhile.

$33k is crazy-steep to me though. I'm in the market for a new car and I could buy a brand new 2015 AUDI A3 for $33k.

Amazing lens though, I hope somebody rents one of these for the next show I'm on!

I have a hard time understanding the mindset that it is acceptable to borrow $33K for a car that loses value daily but unacceptable to borrow the same $33K for professional equipment that makes them money daily. What happened to people floating SBA loans and starting companies in this industry?

Fewer and fewer companies wanting to pay 'full rate' and instead going the 'good enough'
route? I mean if you've got the clients that will pay, more power too you, grab this lens and
yes, I wish I were you :) As for me, the LAST thing I am going to do, is take out a loan. If
I can't buy it with money in my businesses 'upgrade' account, then the business can't afford it.
Of course I have also, never in my life bought a new car either, the most expensive car I ever
bought was about $7500 or to put it in forum terms, about as much as a FS700 body...

Good answer to Cabrio with a wider range.

I'm sure it will do well.

And look for Matt Duclos to make one of his user-changeable mounts for it.

What I'm thinking is that in the future there might be a more affordable lens to attach to the servo unit. I was really excited until I saw the cost which is more than twice the price of my C300.

So great for those working in top end broadcast and cinema but not so great a few steps down the ladder. Still I guess this will become a hot rental item for specific productions.

except...you know a car can

drive you to work
drive you to groceries
drive you to the bank
drive you to the hospital

Its an awesome lens, but I dont see a lot of people putting out a loan for a lens like this, this is more aimed for rentals and ENG crews.

But can a car make you profit? Can you rent your car when you're not using it? Can you call your car a business expense and depreciate it? 35 years ago, we were getting six figure SBA loans for our gear and spending every dime of it. I'm just sensing a change of climate lately. Not judging it as a bad thing...paying cash as you go has got to be a good thing. And yes, we paid $20K and more for our lenses on our Ikegamis.

Can you call your car a business expense? SO you don't write off mileage or gas? I can't fly on a lens to the job site. You gonna pack up all your gear and take the public bus to the job? "Can a car make you profit"? What? I have three cars for my work. 3/4 ton Van with 17 ft. trailer. Mini Van and then my compact to go to client meetings. They all drive to either shoots or sell work. They all get write offs.

"you can rent it when not using it". OK. Go ahead. Also figure in the insurance you pay for it or the taxes you pay even if the renter is paying the insurance overhead. Really fun when somebody returns your gear all damaged. "It's a rental, don't be gentle". Wanna know how many times I've heard that? What is the rental gonna get you? You have to compete regionally with large rental houses. Say you have the lens in NY. Are you going to ship it to me in LA? "I need to rent your lens for a 3 month shoot. Are you sure you're not gonna need it?" Well 90 days at $300/day is $27,000. I'll buy it and sell it when I'm done for $26,000. But I still can't use the turn signal on this lens.

"Can a car make you a profit?" Silliest post I've seen all year! I'm off to teleport myself and my gear to a shoot!

You can remove the servo and use in cinema applications with your existing follow focus, if you so wish.

33k is steep. Still I think one can buy this rather than the CN-E 30-105 T2.8 LS as the zoom range and servo can help in both cinema as well as broadcast applications.

It's definitely been a change in this industry and I'm sure not pining for the good ol' days where the costs were prohibitive to shoot anything better than VHS. There's still a place for the $100,000 investment, but it's not as likely to be amongst DVX users. It's great that we can get amazing gear for $10,000 and that students and hobbyists can get great images with only a $1,000 investment. I guess where professionals get grumpy is when the hobbyists take their business away with that 1% investment.
Anyway…we can argue all day about the nature of the business. What about this lens?

Yea, my company bought me a car and I've been depreciating it for the last three years. But unless you're in the transport business, it's just another expense like my airfare and hotel room. Why would you want to borrow money for local transportation and not a camera or lens? Good luck floating a loan for a car if you're going into the media production business. We got some money for a van to build our location truck out of but the vast majority of the loan went to equipment. I had to pay for my Harley. ;)
