C500: Canon C700 Announced.

At the very least, they would have to replace the sensor and image processors in the C700 to make it output 8K. The upgrade cost would be equal to that of a new $30K camera.

Besides, they have already demonstrated a working 8K version of the C500 (in a C300 II body):

I could see this exact model coming in 2-3 years when one recorder will do the work of 4 Odysseys.

Btw, Jim, thanks for the Ultralight adapters you sold me the other week in the Burbank EVS store. They are pretty solid in holding the Odyssey. It seems like a very durable product and I would definitely recommend them to others.

Thanks and glad to help you......but I think you are over estimating the cost of the upgrade whenever that happens....and from what I feel, I guessing it would be more in the $10K and under range...total guess.....and that would depend on what was being put into the camera as Jon pointed out. On the 8K Paris thing, they have been showing that functioning prototype since NAB 2015...and it was just to let people know that Canon is working on a feasible solution for down the road.

8K. I just can't go there. So much overkill, so much unneeded resolution for anything. This is what camera technology companies do when they can't truly innovate. Need much more DR, better color fidelity, better audio, more effective and comfortable ergonomics, etc. From an engineering standpoint, endlessly pursuing increased resolution is a fools errand.

I think the great advantage of a Canon 8K sensor would be the possibility of 4K RGB 4:4:4, in the same way that the 4 2K streams on the C500/C300 II allow for 2K RGB. This would be the main attraction for me.

“Chris Clarke was the DoP on the shoot and he was using the EOS C700, which was a pre-production version and I think the only one in the world at that time..The EOS C700 was brought in from Japan a few days day before so we had very little time to get to know it. But because we are all familiar Canon users anyway, it was less of a concern. It’s a Canon workflow and also Chris has used the C300 Mark II a lot so he was used to the system. But I made his life very difficult technically as I wanted the film all shot in available light so he was shooting from shadow to highlight in the same frame. Thankfully the C700 has a very high dynamic range and we shot in 4K RAW, which is my preference for any shoot. The camera was a PL mount version so we used a selection of Cinema EOS primes and zooms plus EF zooms and primes on the C300 Mark IIs and the ME200S-SH that was rigged to the car for the moving shots. With the exception of that, everything else was shot in 4K.”.”
