C500: Canon C500 and Odyssey 7q+ recording cheat sheet

Thanks Mitch!! I appreciate the folks at CD continuing to make a solid product. The only feature that I think would make the Odyssey a better product is the ability to bake in the LUTs.

Thanks. One small note on your chart: You indicate that 2x SDI connections are required for 4K/QHD->4K/UHD Apple ProRes. This is incorrect. Odyssey7Q+ can currently only record up to 30p in this method, and as such only a single SDI cable is needed.

Agree wholeheartedly with that, and I'd like to add that support for the windowed 120fps mode would be icing on the cake! Hopefully it will be added eventually. Thanks, Mitch, still loving my C500/O7Q combo - it's never let me down and gives killer images with an easy on-set workflow. Keep at it!

SEVEN MINUTE BOOT TIME?

Is that for real?

No, not for real. When you boot into the mode you want, it takes a while (4 min O7Q+, 3 min O7Q), but when you re-boot the device after that it's pretty quick. Device can hold two modes in quick memory (if nothing has changed) and that means you can hold both Canon 4KRAW to ProRes and Canon RAW and switch quickly between those.

Canon C500 itself boots faster than that, in my experience.

If you want to switch between 3 or 4 modes on the Odyssey7Q you do get into some trouble with long boot times, but in my experience it's very rare that I need that.
F.ex. 120fps HalfRAW, 60fps RAW, 23.98fps RAW to ProRes and you are doing fine with 2 modes and short switching & short boot time.
If you need a screen to view menus and you can't use the LCD, get an EVF or monitor, don't reboot the O7Q to get into baseband video mode as that will be a PITA.

Also: Combined power consumption is relatively low compared to comparable cameras, so you don't need to power down as often (in my experience).

Gotcha, thanks for the response guys. We're considering a C500 + 7Q for our next kit. Only concern is that we do a lot of interview setups and the fan noise could become a problem. I'll be renting one to test it all out first. Any other gotchas I should be aware of?

Back when I was at AbelCine, the head Rental Technician designed and built a fan rig that mounted to the C500. It used larger and very quiet fans to force air through the camera vents and prevented the C500 internal fans from kicking in. Worked great.
